Chapter 1 Unexpected Beginnings

Chapter 1

Tears welled up in Sarah's eyes as she watched Nathan, her husband, throw the divorce papers on the table with a callous thud.

She looked at him with eyes full of tears, "Nathan, three years of love, devotion, and sacrifice seemed to mean nothing to you now, she cried. Sarah couldn't comprehend how their once-happy marriage had unravelled so quickly.

" Sarah, Let's end this charade," Nathan said, his voice devoid of emotion, before turning away.

Sarah's heart sank as Nathan's words pierced through her like daggers. "A charade?" she repeated, her voice trembling with disbelief. "Was our marriage just a game to you, Nathan? A facade to appease your family?"

Nathan stayed quiet, looking cold and distant, just like he always did in their marriage. Sarah got upset, feeling both angry and sad because she saw how little he cared.

"You never cared for me, did you?" she whispered, her voice barely audible amidst the weight of their crumbling relationship.

Nathan looked at Sarah without any form of remorsefulness. "You were nothing more than a maid my family forced me to marry," he confessed bluntly. "I never loved you, Sarah. You knew that from the beginning."

The words hit Sarah like a ton of bricks, shattering whatever remained of her shattered heart. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she struggled to comprehend the magnitude of Nathan's betrayal.

"And all this time, I thought we had something real," she choked out, one could barely hear her speak. "I gave you everything, Nathan. My love, my loyalty, my devotion... How could you throw it all away so callously?"

Nathan didn't show any emotion, even though Sarah was hurting, he was unaffected by her pain. "It's over, Sarah," he declared, his voice firm and resolute. "There's no point in dwelling on the past. We both know this marriage was a mistake."

Struggling to hold back her emotions, Sarah whispered, "But I still love you." She had waited to tell him for a long time, but his not caring made her feel worse.

With a bitter laugh, Nathan ignored her words, reminding her he would never descend so low to be in love with a maid.

"You know I've moved on, Sarah. It's time you did too," Nathan said, his words cutting deeper than any knife.

Heartbroken and defeated, Sarah sank to the floor, "you are breaking me Nathan" She cried feeling the weight of their failed marriage crushing her spirit.

Despite the ache in her heart, Sarah calmed herself down as soon as Nathan informed her they were expected at a dinner at the prestigious Thompson estate.

Putting on the dress Nathan had laid out for her, Sarah tried to hide her pain behind a pretence of composure, but the tears remained in her eyes.

As they arrived at the Thompson estate, Sarah's anxiety grew with each passing moment, afraid of Nathan's rich family looking at her and judging her.

As Nathan's sisters gathered around Sarah, their faces twisted with resentment and hostility. Sarah braced herself for what was to come, knowing that Nathan's sisters harboured deep-seated animosity towards her.

"Are you also here for the family Dinner, Dear Maid," Emily, Nathan's sister, said to her with a cruel look. "You should know by now that you do not belong here. No, it is impossible to have a maid on the same table with royalties."

Sarah felt a pang of hurt at Emily's words but remained silent, unwilling to escalate the tension further.

"Yeah, you were just a maid, Sarah. How did you ever think you'd be good enough for Nathan?" Emily continued, her tone cutting like a knife.

Sarah bit her lip, fighting back tears as she struggled to maintain her composure in the face of such cruelty.

Nathan's other sister, Samantha, chimed in with a sneer. "You're pathetic, Sarah. Just get out of here and stop feeling like you belong."

Mrs. Thompson intervened, her voice firm and commanding. "That's enough, Emily, Samantha," she reprimanded, her gaze stern as she addressed her daughters. "We will not tolerate this behaviour. Sarah deserves our respect, regardless of the circumstances."

Sarah felt a wave of gratitude towards Mrs Thompson for standing up for her, but the wounds inflicted by Nathan's sisters ran deep.

With a heavy heart, Sarah turned away, knowing that despite Mrs Thompson's intervention, the scars left by Nathan's family would take time to heal.

But among all the mean looks and unkind words, Sarah felt better when Mrs Thompson hugged her. Mrs. Thompson, Nathan's grandmother, had always treated her with kindness and respect.

Sarah had to bear their unkindness quietly, hoping Nathan would support her, but his quietness said a lot.

Mrs. Thompson had noticed the unkind attitude of Nathan's siblings towards Sarah, so he called out for Nathan.

"Nathan, why would you just sit there and watch your siblings disrespect your wife? He asked. "Grandmother, I don't know why you always want to take sides with Sarah but remember, Sarah is not my wife. She is a maid and no one respects a maid.

Mrs Thompson couldn't believe her ears. "Sarah, dear, we're so sorry about all of this," Mrs Thompson said, her voice soft and comforting. "We never wanted things to turn out this way."

She reached out and squeezed Sarah's hand reassuringly. "You deserve so much better, Sarah," she said, her eyes reflecting genuine compassion.

Finally, as the night drew to a close, Dinner was over and Sarah needed to return home but Nathan would not go home with her. Sarah bid farewell to Mrs. Thompson, her heart heavy with sorrow and regret.

Sarah's heart skipped a beat as her phone rang, displaying an unfamiliar number. With trembling hands, she answered, bracing herself for whatever unpleasantness awaited her.

"Hello?" she answered nervously, her voice shaking with fear.

On the other end of the line, with a voice that sounded very mean. "Listen here, Sarah, "You better sign those divorce papers, or I'll make sure your life is a living hell."

Sarah felt scared when she recognized it was Nathan's girlfriend's voice. She couldn't believe the audacity of the woman, threatening her like this.

"What do you want from me?" Sarah demanded, though she was scared, she sounded brave.

"Oh, you'll see," the woman replied, she was very sure of herself "Just know that if you don't do as I say, you'll regret it."

Sarah's hands shook with anger as she tried to stay calm. How dare this woman try to intimidate her into signing away her rights? She thought to herself.

Before she could respond, the line went dead, leaving Sarah feeling shaken and vulnerable. She knew she shouldn't let the woman's threats control her, but she still felt scared, making her situation even harder.

Sarah was still lost in thought when her phone rang once more. She initially thought it was Nathan's girlfriend calling back, but to her surprise, it was her estranged brother, whom she hadn't spoken to in years.

"Sarah," it was her brother's voice. "I know we've been apart for years, but I need to talk to you. Where are you? Can we meet at Father's old house in a week?
