Chapter 1 1

Writer's POV

Jaxon Patterson, Landon Jennings' best friend, sat in the study of his grand mansion, his brow furrowed with worry. News had reached him through his sources that Vincent Perkins, in a desperate bid to salvage his sinking business, intended to marry off Sylvia, Jaxon's ward.

Memories flooded Jaxon's mind of the solemn promise he made to Landon on his deathbed, to protect Sylvia at all costs. He knew he couldn't rely on Jade, Landon's wife, to care for their daughter. Jaxon had always been wary of Jade's intentions and character.

He rose from his chair and made his way to find his wife, Ophelia Patterson. She was seated in the living room, engrossed in a magazine. Sitting beside her, he shared the troubling news.

"Oh, Jaxon, we can't let this happen!" Ophelia exclaimed, worry evident in her voice as she gripped his hands.

Ophelia was privy to all the details; she had been friends with Landon back in college and was well aware of Jade's disdain for her own daughter. Together, they had resolved to care for Sylvia. However, an unforeseen obstacle had emerged: Jade had married Vincent Perkins, creating a barrier that prevented them from intervening in Sylvia's affairs.

Jade's marriage to Vincent Perkins complicated matters further, as it restricted Jaxon and Ophelia from entering the Perkins household or interfering in their family affairs.

Faced with the urgency of the situation, they devised a covert plan to protect Sylvia. They hired a discreet man to shadow her whenever she left the house, ensuring her safety. Reports from this appointed guardian reassured the Pattersons that Sylvia remained physically unharmed.

Their vigilance extended even to Sylvia's college years in Chicago, where the appointed guardian continued to watch over her, reporting back to Jaxon and Ophelia. They remained vigilant, always aware of Sylvia's whereabouts and well-being.

Feeling the weight of responsibility, Jaxon comforted his worried wife, gently squeezing her hands. "Don't worry, my love. We'll find a way. We made a promise to our friend, and we won't break it."

Ophelia, however, expressed a sense of urgency. "But Jaxon, we can't delay. Perkins will soon force her into marriage, without considering her wishes."

"Yeah, that man is quite notorious in business circles and doesn't have the best reputation as a person either," Jaxon admitted.

He hesitated before revealing his solution to Ophelia, unsure of her reaction. "I have an idea, but I'm not sure if you'll like it. It's a bit risky, but I think it might be our best shot at keeping Sylvia safe."

"What's the idea?" Ophelia asked, her curiosity piqued. At this critical moment, any solution was worth considering if it meant Sylvia's safety.

Jaxon took a deep breath before explaining his plan. "I was thinking of investing in Vincent's business and offering him a deal he can't refuse. In return, we ask for Sylvia's hand in marriage for our son."

He watched his wife carefully, anxious to see her reaction.

Ophelia was looking at his husband with wide eyes as if she had received a shock.

Looking at his wife's initial reaction, Jaxon sensed her hesitation about the plan. He felt compelled to explain further, "I understand it might seem impulsive, but time is of the essence. I truly believe this is our best option right now. Besides, I wouldn't mind at all having Sylvia as our daughter-in-law. We can trust that she'll be in good hands."

To his surprise and relief, Ophelia's face lit up with enthusiasm. "Jaxon, this is brilliant!" she exclaimed, her excitement evident. "I would be thrilled to have Sylvia as our daughter-in-law. I know she'd be a perfect match for our son." With that, she hugged him tightly, expressing her support for the plan.

However her excitement vanished instantly when she realized that they had to ask their son if he was going to be interested in the marriage, and he was not someone to be forced into doing what he doesn't want.

"But Jaxon, do you think our son will go along with this? You know his lifestyle; he might not be keen on such arrangements," Ophelia expressed her concern.

"I understand, but we have to try. It's for his own sake, and for Sylvia. She deserves a chance at happiness," Jaxon replied firmly. "She's a good-hearted girl."

"Agreed. Let's approach him and hope for the best. It's the best we can do for both of them," Ophelia said optimistically.

"Hmm... I suppose I'll start by speaking with Vincent and presenting him with our offer, ensuring he doesn't rush into marrying off Sylvia to someone else. Then we can talk to our son," Jaxon suggested.

Later that day, Jaxon wasted no time in visiting Vincent, wanting to resolve the situation promptly. As expected, Vincent readily agreed to the proposal.

Naturally, Vincent found the offer irresistible; not only was he receiving a lucrative deal, but also the esteemed Jaxon Patterson was investing in his company. Moreover, the burden of handling Sylvia was lifted from his shoulders. He couldn't have been happier with the outcome.
