Chapter 1 The Beginning

*Chapter One: The Enchanted Map

The air in the ancient library hung heavy with the scent of aged parchment, and the flickering candlelight danced across the timeworn bookshelves. I, a young scholar with an insatiable thirst for adventure, sat frozen before a book that told the tale of the enchanted and mythical artifact-the Enchanted Key.

Since birth, I have been told of a mythical and enchanting creation made centuries ago which could unlock the gates to the Lost City. The Lost City had already been discovered some years ago but, for some bizarre reason, the gates were bolted shut and it is believed to be a whole new world of it's own. Ever since, I knew my destiny was to find that key and unlock the Secrets to the Lost City. "What a day" I said as I packed my books and made to leave before my best friend, Henry, walked in.

"Zack, I have been looking everywhere for you. I have got something important to talk to you about. You got a minute?"

"Yeah sure. Just give me a sec to put all my stuff together, ok?" I pleaded as I hurriedly packed my books. We headed to the library office I converted into a small space that held my shelf of research books, my small fridge and my desk.

"So what's the matter, Hen?U look.......confused" I asked.

"Well, earlier this afternoon, I was putting stuff together for the expedition about the, you know, key. So while I was working, this lady walked up to me and said she wanted to join the expedition. She said her name was Chloe and she has been looking for some action and we were the ones to give it to her. So I told her I would get back to her later, once I was down talking to you, of course" Henry finished, looking at me from the corner of his eye with a smirk on his face.

"Well, I can't take someone on such a difficult journey without knowing if she is tough and able to carry on the task. I will need to see her and also give her some small jobs to do to know her strength and weaknesses to know my decision."

"Your call, but, left for me, she is perfect for the job" Henry said. " Well, I guess I better hit the sack and I suggest you do that as well, my friend. You look like you haven't slept in three days" Henry said, standing up.

"Yeah, I better get some sleep. See you tomorrow". I left the office and went down the hall and out the door into my car and drove home. I got out and headed to the bedroom where I dozed off immediately.

**************

The next day, I got dressed and drove to the office where Henry was waiting patiently for me at the door.

"You are up so early. Are you ok?" I inquired.

"Yeah, I am fine. I just wanted to get this over with. Here she is" Henry gestured towards a tall beautiful lady walking down the hallway towards the both of us. She was dressed in a black leather jacket, a black inner blouse and cargo pants with boots.

"Zack, I want you to meet Chloe Hung. She is willing to go with us on our trip to finding the key" Henry said.

"Good to see you, Mr Zack. I hope our time together will be amazing." She said with lowered lashes. Henry and I exchanged a look before I said;

"Well, I was planning a series of tests to try and know if you are good for the job. But I don't think they will be necessary anymore. Welcome to the team, Chloe". I said, shaking her hand.

"We leave in two days. I understand you are a tech wizard. You can help the navigation team to find the safest location for our helicopter to land."

"No problem, sir". She said as she walked away.

"Well, what do you think", Henry asked.

"I don't know what to think. Let's see as the whole thing goes."

"Lucien, let's get a divorce," I said in a peremptory tone that was long overdue, the most decisive farewell to this absurd marriage. We had been married for exactly three years-three years that, for me, were filled with nothing but endless loneliness and torment. For three years, the husband who should have stood by my side through every storm, Lucien Sullivan, had completely disappeared from my life as if he had never existed. He vanished without a trace, leaving me alone to endure this empty, desolate marriage. Today, I finally received his message: "I'm back. Come pick me up at the airport." When I read his words, my heart leapt with joy, and I raced to the airport, thinking that he finally understood my love and was coming back to me. But his cruelty was far worse than I could have ever imagined-he was accompanied by a pregnant woman, and that woman was Carla, my closest and most trusted friend. In that moment, all of my previous excitement, all my hope, and all of our shared laughter and tears turned into the sharpest of daggers, stabbing into my heart and leaving me gasping for air. Now, all I want is to escape from this place that has left me so broken-to lick my wounds in solitude. Even if these wounds will remain with me for the rest of my life, I refuse to have anything to do with him ever again. He should know that it was his own hand that trampled our love underfoot, that his coldness and betrayal created this irreparable situation. But when he heard those words, he desperately clung to this broken, crumbling marriage, unwilling to let it end-almost as though doing so could rewind time and return everything to how it used to be. "Aurora, come back. I regret everything!" Regret? Those simple words stirred no emotion in me-only endless sadness and fury. My heart let out a frantic, desperate scream: It's too late for any of this!
