Love's Fortune

This was the fifth time she had tried everything possible to make the car start. The old Volkswagen beetle which she got from her late father has been giving her a tough time. August tried for the last time and decided to call some boys to help push the car. She was extremely late for work and she had to drop her mom at the hospital for her regular checkup. The car finally started as she drove speedily to the hospital and left for her place of work where she works as a clerk. She hurriedly wore her shoes, as she walked briskly inside.

Everyone minded their business and they were all engrossed in their work. August walked to her office only to see a letter in an envelope lying on her desk. Fear gripped her as she used her shaky hand to read its contents and behold, it was a sack letter. With tears in her eyes, the letter fell out of her hands, she walked slowly to her seat and started weeping. A few minutes later, one of the staff walked in and told her to clear her desk. She ran her hands over her head as she walked to the manager's office, who kept mute as she kept explaining why she came in late, but he still didn't listen. He asked her to leave his office. August had no choice but to leave. She walked around the streets of Saskatoon as tears welled up on her face. She had just lost a good-paying job within the blink of an eye, so many thoughts came into her head. What bothered her the most was how she would manage to save up money for her mother's surgery. Those thoughts ran through her mind not noticing a little girl between the ages of fourteen, and fifteen running, they bumped into each other as the girl who lost control fell, "I'm so sorry, so sorry dear" August kept saying as she tried lifting her, "Don't touch me you jerk" she said rudely breathing hard trying to stand up, "Benita, Are you ok baby?" The voice of a man, who happened to be the girl's father, "She pushed me Dad" she said hugging him, as he stroked her hair, "I'm so sorry sir I never saw her coming" August said apologetically but it seemed he was still not satisfied with her apology, "You couldn't see her coming meaning you are blind?" He asked sarcastically, "I said I'm sorry," August said pissed off, "let's go, baby," he said as he held her hand giving August a scary stare, it was more like a warning, she hissed as she walked away. She stopped by a grocery store down the road and bought some groceries. As she hopped into her car, this time it started, she drove to the hospital and picked up her mother. When they got home, August decided to go get freshened up so she could prepare dinner for both of them. She prepared food as they both ate silently, "you are barely eating. August, are you okay baby?" Mrs Mabel asked in a shaky voice, "Mum I'm okay, just eat so you can have your drugs" August said as she tried feeding her, but she shook her head, "Are you ok my child?" She asked again worriedly, August took a deep breath and tried to hold back her tears, but she couldn't hold them in, her mum stood up to comfort her "Why are you crying sweetie" Mrs. Mabel asked, "I lost my job today, but, mum, please don't think too much about it. I'll get another one", August said to her, but what followed shocked her, as her mum started crying, "Mum, what is it? Why are you crying? I promise to find another job", August said, trying to make her stop crying, "You just lost your job because of me. I know I've been a burden to you, my girl," she said as August moved closer to her, wrapping her hands on her shoulder, "Mum, please don't say that, you are not a burden to me please and you should know I love you so much" August said. hugging her tightly, "I'm sorry," Mrs Mabel said finally, "Don't be sorry please, now let's eat before the food gets cold," she said as they ate once again in silence, after making sure her mum was fast asleep. August sat down as she took out her laptop to search for a job. Luckily, she found one "RS company limited". They needed a secretary. She quickly sent her application letter as well as her curriculum vitae. Surprisingly, she received an email telling her to come for the interview the following day. August was so happy that she made everything she needed available on the following day. She woke up very early so she could get ready early enough. She had a quick bath, applied light makeup on her face, and dressed formally, looking very elegant in the dress she wore. August went downstairs, where her mum was sitting. "Mum, how do I look?" August asked with a beautiful smile on her face. Her mum smiled so much and said "You look extremely beautiful my angel". August thanked her and kissed her mum on the cheeks, reminding her to take her drugs as she left. August got into her car, she tried starting the car and, as usual, the car didn't start. She said to herself "Not today car, not today". She got out of her car and decided to take a taxi instead. It took her about 20mins to get one and that made her extremely late. She began to worry. She got to the location where the interview was to be conducted. Luckily for her, they had not started the interview, because the interviewer had not yet come, and with so much gladness in her heart, she started thanking God. She used the time she had to organize herself. While organizing herself, a group of men walked in. She knew one of them was the interviewer. A few moments later the receptionist walked up to her and told her to go in for her interview, she became so nervous but didn't let it show, she got herself together and walked into a room, as she walked into the room, there was a man there, "Good day sir" she greeted a man who happened to be so engrossed on his desktop, "Are you here for the interview?" He asked without looking up, "yes sir" August replied slowly, "The first door by your right" he said as August walked briskly into the office, it was so massive, the furniture was luxurious and sophisticated, and it was richly decorated with it's elegant sculptures, August walked slowly into the office as a sweet smell swept through her nostril, "Good morning sir" she greeted smiling wondering why he had his chair turned to the back, 'why was everyone acting weird here?' she asked herself confused, "what skills and qualifications do you have that makes you a good fit for trhis job?" He asked without facing her, "I have a strong background in this field sir, with several years of experience..." She was still explaining when he turned to face her, she stopped talking noticing it was the same man she bumped into with his spoilt daughter, "Uhm I'm sorry, please excuse me" she said and was about to walk out, she knew there was no way he could hire her, "Here is your appointment letter, your work starts now, meet my manager he'll be showing you around" he said as he walked out on her, August was still confused, maybe he never recognized her that was one of the reasons he offered her the job on a platter of gold.
