Chapter 1 Letters From the Moon

Author: Wen Jiu Zhan Zhu Ma

I accidentally double-clicked the profile picture of the deceased Mr. Mcdreamy.

A sentence was shown after that. [I patted "Laurant Sherwood" on the shoulder and said, "Come into my arms, Darling."]

Five minutes later, Mr. Mcdreamy replied: [Won't your husband mind it?]

1

Not long before I graduated from college, I finally plucked up the courage to write a letter to Laurant to confess my love for him.

After waiting uneasily for a few days, I finally received a message from Laurant at night.

The meaning of the short message was ambiguous. [Come to my house?]

I knew that the invitation was too frivolous, but I still went to his house. I even changed into a sexy black dress that I never dared to wear.

On the way to his house, I felt excited as if I was floating in the air and stepping on clouds.

But when I pushed open the door of his house, I was stunned.

The men in the living room had already drunk a lot. They were all looking at me and there was an ambiguous light in their eyes.

Laurant leaned lazily against the bar counter with a glass of champagne between his slender fingers. His handsome face was in the shadows, looking elegant and cool.

A beautiful woman was standing on her tiptoes and leaning on his shoulder. She pointed her chin at me and said, "Lauri, is this your new girlfriend?"

Laurant sounded indifferent as he said, "She's a student working in the laboratory under the work-study program."

Yes, during my four years in college, I worked as his assistant in his laboratory. I was as quiet as a shadow behind him.

To have a secret crush on someone was like taking a chronic poison. It could silently seep into one's bones over the years.

In the end, I couldn't hold it back and confessed my feelings to him.

The beautiful woman looked me up and down and said with a meaningful smile, "Look at how she's dressed. Her intention doesn't seem to be as simple as a student's."

I stood under everyone's meaningful gazes and gripped the hem of my dress embarrassedly.

Laurant glanced at me casually and said, "Miss Frost, could you help me clean this place?"

Fine.

It turned out that he had asked me to come to his house just to help him clean up the mess after the wine party.

"Okay." Lowering my head, I rushed to the kitchen all in a fluster.

The woman seemed to have seen through my mind. I heard her say behind me, "She likes you."

The men laughed in chorus. They could see my clumsy feelings clearly.

A man joked with Laurant. "Now that the girl likes you so much, why don't you accept her?"

I felt too ashamed to show my face. I lowered my head and tried hard to wash the glasses, but my heart was beating wildly. Pricking up my ears, I listened nervously to the sounds outside the kitchen.

In the sound of running water, I vaguely heard Laurant sneer. "I never think about it."

The man laughed again and said, "The girl is very beautiful. You are even unwilling to be a cradle snatcher?"

Laurant asked slowly, "Who would love a disabled person?"

2

I didn't know how I left Laurant's house. I squatted at the roadside and cried for a long time.

Yes, my left ear was deaf, and my right ear couldn't hear very well. I had been wearing a hearing aid.

Was a disabled person not qualified to have a crush on someone?

My self-esteem was trampled on by Laurant. I swore to myself that I would stop having a crush on him.

During that time, I was in a very bad state. My brother was worried about me, so he came to my university to pick me up every day.

Since he came to my university many times, there was a rumor in my department that I was about to get married.

It was too ludicrous, but I didn't explain it to others.

After I was admitted to an Ivy League College, I went abroad.

I was away for five years. Then, my alma mater provided me with a position.

I was introduced back to my alma mater as a talent. When I moved to my new office, I found an old copy of the newspaper on the shelf.

The news about Laurant suddenly appeared before my eyes after I was away for five years.

The title of the authoritative report was offensive to the eye. [The famous young physicist, Laurant Sherwood, passed away at home at two o'clock in the morning. He died at the age of 32.]

The man in the black-and-white photo looked handsome and gentle, and there seemed to be a smile at the bottom of his eyes. However, the smile was remote and cold.

The student who was helping me move came over. "Well, isn't this Professor Sherwood?"

I felt cold all over, and my teeth chattered as I asked, "How... did he die?"

"He died of a disease." The student recalled and said, "It was said that in order to finish a research, he refused to be hospitalized and relied on medicine to survive for a few years."

I stared fixedly at the newspaper in my hand, and the student's voice gradually faded in my ear.

"About two years ago, Professor Sherwood successfully developed the living regenerative cochlea. He passed away a few days after that."

"Professor Frost, this office of yours used to be Professor Sherwood's. After he passed away, it was sealed."

The cochlear implant in my ear made a sharp sound for no reason. I covered my ears and said, "I see."

The student said nothing more about it. "We've carried everything up here. Call us if you need anything again."

When he went out, he closed the door gently.

The office that had just been cleaned was spacious and empty. The green trees outside the window were swaying, and dust was dancing in the sunlight that penetrated in.

I sat in the sun, but my hands and feet were cold.

In fact, over the years, I occasionally thought of Laurant. But whenever I thought of him, I still resented him. I didn't want to see him again for the rest of my life.

But now I knew I really could not see him again. I felt very sad.

After sitting in a daze for a long time, I took out my mobile phone and found Laurant's Skype account.

I saw the last message in the chat frame. It was the third year of my studying abroad. He hadn't sent me a message for a long time, but during Christmas, he sent me one to wish me a Merry Christmas.

[Merry Christmas, Miss Frost. Wish peace be with you every year.]

That should be his last Christmas.

But at that time, I was harboring resentment toward him. I didn't want to reply a single word to his message.

I touched his profile picture gently over and over again with a trembling finger.

I should have replied to him. At least, I might see him again.

When I was drowned in all kinds of moods, my phone suddenly vibrated.

I was surprised to find that I had accidentally double-clicked on his profile picture.

A sentence was shown after that. [I patted "Laurant Sherwood" on the shoulder and said, "Come into my arms, Darling."]

3

Before I could vent my sadness, I was confused by the words "Come into my arms, Darling".

Anyone who used Skype knew that if we double-clicked someone's profile picture, a "nudge" message would be sent to him.

But the latter half of the "nudge" message was set by someone you had nudged.

This meant that Laurant had set the content of his "nudge" message as "Come to my arms, Darling."

Was Laurant so totty?

Before I could recover from the shock, a line of words slowly appeared in the chat frame.

Laurant: [Won't your husband mind it?]

My body shook violently. A dead person had replied to my Skype message?

No. How was that possible?

It had been almost two years since Laurant passed away. At that time, Skype didn't even have the "nudge" function. How could he set the content of his "nudge" message?

Someone must have used his phone after he passed away.

I typed a question: [Who are you?]

There was an instant reply: [Laurant].

After that, he teased me. [Miss Frost, you didn't even change my alias?]

His tone and the way of addressing me were too familiar.

But I didn't believe it. [Stop joking. I know Laurant has passed away. Why do you pretend to be him?]

This time, he didn't reply for a few minutes.

I urged him nervously. [Please reply.]

Laurant finally replied: [Do you want me to die so badly? Okay, I'll tell you the truth.]

I replied: [???]

Laurant: [I'm Laurant. I'm lying in the coffin and chatting with you.]

I could imagine the man's casual and playful look. My heart suddenly trembled violently.

Had I met a ghost?

To make it worse, Laurant added: [It's dark all around. Are you afraid?]

My hand trembled and my phone nearly fell out of my hand.

If there wasn't anyone using his phone to play a prank on me, was this man a human or a ghost?

I quickly clicked on the voice call invitation. My heart was in my throat.

Finally, he answered it.

But I couldn't hear anything.

It was as if he was really in a dark enclosed space. There was no sound of wind or human voice.

My trembling voice slipped out of my lips. "Laurant?"

I heard his deep and gentle voice. "Yes, it's me."

The phone dropped out of my hand, and I hurried to catch it.

Laurant noticed it and he chuckled in a low voice.

Warm sunlight enveloped my body. In broad daylight, I really couldn't believe that I had met a ghost.

Countless thoughts flashed through my mind. As a physicist, I would rather believe in parallel spaces.

Although the idea was crazy, I still asked in a trembling voice, "Laurant, what's the date today?"

"May 11th, 2018."

It seemed that I had made Laurant feel helpless. He teased me playfully, saying, "You're a fool. Although I'm in the coffin, the date is the same."
