Chapter 1 PROLOGUE

I was chopping wood at the backyard, when I heard a crash from the little cabin

I shared with my aunt, Annabel. She was drunk again.

It was a daily routine for her to come home drunk, so I didn't budge. I muttered some inaudible words to myself as I stopped chopping and scooped up the woods I had split already. I hoped that she hadn't fallen, because I wasn't certain on how to get her up on my own.

"Aunt, are you okay?" I asked as I stopped by the entrance and dropped the wood. My concern grew when I didn't get an answer, so I rushed into the house.

She was passed out in the middle of the floor, her eyes bloodshot and her lips blue. I rushed to her side, falling to the floor with a sharp jar to my knees that barely registered in my frantic rush to reach her.

"I'm sorry aunt. I didn't know you were actually hurt. I should have come right away."

Her eyes flicked open immediately like some sort of magic.

Was she pretending to be unconscious to see my reaction?

"Get your hands off me and bring the woods in this moment." Her voice rang in my ears.

I hurriedly stood up and left to pack the woods I dumped outside earlier. After grabbing some in my arms, I hastened my steps back to the house.

I was about to open the door when a loud bang came, as the door flew right into my face, throwing me across the room and splattering the woods on the floor.

"What did I tell you about being so sluggish and lazy?" She yelled walking towards where I had fallen.

Huh? What would she do to me this time?

I couldn't move as I hadn't recovered from the pain inflicted on me. I tasted blood on my lips, the door had hit my face leaving some cuts.

"I... I am... so sorry aunt." I tried to say meekly.

She landed me a kick on my stomach and pulled me up by my hair. Within a few seconds, she punched me on my face and stomach.

I fell down and curled as I tried to protect my breasts, but she kept kicking and punching me while screaming at the top of her voice.

"Today is the day I'm going to kill you." She said, picking up one of the woods that was on the floor. She started canning my back, for a moment I felt as though my back was on fire. She usually whipped me with a belt but she had never hit me, using a stick.

I screamed while wriggling in pain as she hit me, until I felt my whole body go numb. I saw total darkness. Perhaps, that was what death felt like. Peaceful and quiet. But unfortunately, I wasn't dead yet.

"Get the fuck up and make dinner before I kill you." My aunt said, as she kicked my stomach one last time before she walked out.

I immediately tried to get up but my left leg was some sort of fractured. Painful tears flooded down my eyes as I tried to help myself up, knowing that if I didn't go to the kitchen, I'll be up for a new series of torture.

My back was badly bruised with my clothes, stained with blood. I limped to the small bathroom and opened the first aid box, as I tried to bandage myself as quickly as I could.

I slowly changed into new clothes, wearing an oversized hoodie to give my back space to heal and headed back to the kitchen.

Damn! I just had this load of bad luck again. I ran into my drunk aunt outside the kitchen.

"Where is my dinner, you lazy witch?" She fired, slapping me hard on the face. I felt sudden heat and tears come again.

"I am giving you three minutes to fix dinner.* She said, as she pushed me into the kitchen so hard that I fell on my stomach.

She then walked in and stepped on my leg that was now clearly swollen, with her four inches heels.

"I am doing you a favor by allowing your filthy and lazy self to stay here." She said fiercely, turning the heel harder on my knee. She did it for a few seconds, but it felt like forever before she walked out leaving me lying on the floor.

I slowly got up ignoring the pain, hoping to find the kitchen crystal neat as I left it, but a heap of utensils greeted me. I immediately got to work and cleaned everywhere, before making rice and stew for my aunt. After which I set the table and served her, and went back to cleaning the kitchen.

I still had to mop and clean my aunt's room, but given that my body was in pain, I was much slower than usual. I was almost done cleaning, when I suddenly started feeling dizzy.

My head felt heavy, I wasn't seeing clearly. I decided to sit down for a while but my body gave up and I passed out.

...

The last thing I remembered was cleaning my aunt's room so I could finally catch some sleep, before I suddenly saw darkness.

I tried to open my eyes and stared at my surroundings for a while.

Huh? Where was I? Was I dead?

The walls were white and I struggled to sit up to have a better glimpse of the room.

"No, don't get up yet. I didn't think you would make it, as you had no pulse." An elderly woman said after checking my body temperature and pulse again.

Wait! I had no pulse? Could it be that I collapsed while cleaning? Damn! I need to leave here before she finds me.

"Please let me go. I'm awake now. I'll die for real if she finds me here." I said as tears welled up in my eyes.

"Who? What are you talking about?" She asked, looking confused.

The words that were nearly leaving my mouth choked me in the throat when the door flung open.

I was done for! It was my aunt.

"How is she?" My aunt asked in a calm and collected voice. I have never heard her speak so calmly when talking about me.

"She has some fractures but she will be okay by tomorrow evening." The woman explained.

My aunt walked towards me smiling like she wasn't the one who inflicted pains on me.

"See how much you are costing me? Now you owe me your life too, you piece of shit. As soon as you're out of here, you're going to work your ass off until you pay me." She whispered coldly.

I could only nod my head as she left.

As soon as she left, I cried so hard until I fell asleep again. When will I be free?
