Chapter 1 Prologue

Mariyah Aragon's only goal in life was to give her family a better life. In order to achieve this goal, she needs to study and work hard to pay off her parents' sacrifice for her. And she achieved it.

One night, she was ordered by her mom to return a white handkerchief and pay a sum of money her mother borrowed to her Aunt Helen, she obeyed her thinking it was just the only order to her

But she was deceived by the person she least expected to do it. Her mom literally paid her debt. Neither a money nor a letter of extension for the payment was given, she was the payment. She is the payment.

She swallowed hard as she stared at those pair of dark gray eyes. Shels standing alone with him in his open balcony, doesn't know why she was there and how she got there.

But her mind can't seem to perceive what is happening after hearing those words to him.

Was she really married to him?

"Daughter, please pay the debt we owe to Manang Helen." mom ordered me one night. She handed me the white envelope and a handkerchief.

I looked at it, there was something engraved on the very end of it, I looked at Mama who was surprised

"Mom, what's the handkerchief for?" I ask. She didn't look at me, her trembling hand didn't escape my sight.

"T-Take that to Helen my child.. They'll take care of it.." The last thing she said was almost a whisper.

I held my breath. I know the mama well, she likes to borrow money from people she knows, I don't even know where she gets the payment from, but I just let it go.

I followed what she said, thinking that I would really pay off Mama's debt. I didn't look inside the envelope, thinking that it was the money that mom owed me. I was carrying the handkerchief, thinking that mom was just returning it to Manang Helen, who was guarding a mansion not far from us.

But everyone really dies of delusion. Because of the thought, I will just pay the debt, it means something else. Mama will literally pay off the debt, and I'll be the one to pay it. Payment to a man I just saw in the face of life, staring hard at me, and that's when I found out, I'm married to him.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.
