Chapter 1 Tender hearts

The cool breeze blew gently, making the half brown tree leaves dance in rhythm like it was a song to them. The night was in accordance with the cool soothing air, with the twinkling stars shining brightly and directly to the surface of the earth.

You could hear voices, chattering, laughter and wild happy screams. Everyone was sure having a time of their lives, and enjoying the peaceful serenity of nature. For most people present, they wished the night never ended, because it brought a long peace that was very soothing and refreshing to the soul.

In the presence of these people was Sarah Thompson. A tall, slender pretty young girl. With chestnut brown hair that was about 22inches long, and brown eyes that shone bright and dimmed whenever she was excited. She was a lover of nature who was in no doubt, taking her time to breathe in the soothing air of refreshment and the gift of nature. She was lying in the warm sand, with her face upwards to the sky. Her laughter rang every now and then in the background, and her chuckle was always next after her companion's jokes. Of course she wasn't alone, she had her best friend- Alex Reynolds by her side.

Alex was Sarah's best friend and companion. Tall, handsome, with a nice bodybuild. He had curly dark hair which was always covering a part of his face and made him look breathtaking when he flips it away from his face. With those watery blue eyes of his, you could feel yourself drowning in them. He had the smile of a demi god and was always the center of attraction for girls. Like his best friend, he was enjoying the peaceful nature of the environment around him, and while they enjoyed the gift of nature, they made jokes and talked about all their past memories and how far they had come. He always had something to say that made Sarah laugh, which was always followed by a friendly hit from her.

Their friendship began when Alex's family moved into their new neighbourhood "the tenderloin" in San Francisco. Sarah was living with her mum at the time in a house which was next to the one Alex and his family had just moved in. Sarah was the only child while Alex had a younger sister named Lily. But she passed on from leukemia barely two months after they arrived in San Francisco, leaving her family very devastated over her death.

Sarah and Alex became very close after the death of Lily. Although he was a year older than Sarah, he acted like her big brother, and she was like the younger sister he lost. Their families also grew acquainted with time and so did their children's bond became stronger.

Being born the Same month, Alex's birthday was a week apart from Sarah. His was October 11th while her's was October 18th. The month of October was surely a very celebrated one in both families, as the kids celebrated their birthdays together and almost everyday. They did almost everything together, you could always find them hanging around each other, playing games, going to school together, and even taking turns to sleep in their houses together.

By the Time they got to high school, alot of people including their families thought they were dating, but it was just an innocent relationship they had. Both catering to the needs of one another and giving words of encouragement and advice to the other. They were simply best friends with no romantic feelings, but alot of people thought otherwise . Who could blame them? They were very very close!

Their closeness was kind of a hindrance to their relationship lives because they really had no privacy whatsoever. Alex had tried dating other girls but he had no luck. Few of them rejected him because of his friendship with Sarah, while Megan- the only girl who agreed to date him, broke up with him, after he ditched her at her party to go pick up Sarah from her messed up date.

Sarah also had problems with dating, all the guys she seemed to like always told her to choose between them or Alex, due to them feeling insecure about their friendship. But typically, she always chose Alex over them. She got lucky with a guy named Tyler she was dating at the time, but barely two months into the relationship, he broke up because he was fed up of Alex's presence always hovering around her.At the end, they both decided not to go into any relationship until they graduated from the University and only with people who would actually be comfortable with their friendship.

Graduating from high school seemed like it was under a short notice to their parents. They couldn't believe how fast they'd grown. Sarah was 17 at the time and Alex was 18. They both decided they would apply for college and further their education and both families couldn't be any proud.

Her love for nature, art and painting was top notch, and it was no surprise when she applied for B.V.A Applied arts in college and got admitted. Sarah loved painting, while they were much younger, she made alot of silly paintings and drawings of Alex which would make him cry then, but he was used to it now and always looked forward to a silly painting from her. She also had a voice for singing and wrote alot of lyrics which she never performed anyways, but she had the beliefs that a day for that would come.

As a computer guru, and a talented electronic device maker and repairer, Alex decided to apply for a computer science course In college. And to his excitement and optimism he was granted an admission and he was head over heels happy. His happiness was doubled when he learnt that he and Sarah got admitted into the same university- Baybrook in California, which was less than a four hours drive from their neighbourhood in San Francisco.

Their families were all tears about their departure, but also happy that they would be studying together in the same school. They wished them good luck with life, school and the outside world in general.

University life was fun and quite difficult for them. It was fun for them, because they got an apartment together close to school. And they always had time for their weekend schedules since the other days were always hectic from school and they barely had time for each other. Sarah always looked forward to their Saturday outings- A movie at the cinema, then waffles after. It was something they never missed!

College life came and went by almost as fast as it came. They had one year left, and were preparing big for it. Lectures came and left, practicals, assignments, even the annoying lectures, they were finally on summer break, preparing for the remaining one year and they planned to make more memories and make the most of their summer time.

So here they were, out in the moonlight and outdoor of nature. Laying in the warm sand and pointing at the shinning stars in the sky. Feeling the cool air blow gently on their skin, watching the tree leaves moving in rhythm to the air and some dropping gracefully to the ground. They felt so at peace.

Alex made a funny joke and Sarah chuckled, hitting him lightly on his shoulders, this was a night of a kind, and she was savoring all moments.

" I guess you could draw that" Alex pointed to the biggest star in the sky

" Well I could choose to do so, but I could also choose to draw you and make your head a big shapeless star "

He chuckled. Her sense of humour and silliness always got him everytime. She always had a way of saying silly things to him, or making him the subject of her jokes

" Well you could be nice and just draw a real nice star"

"What if I don't want to be nice?" She turned to face him in the sand, laughing lightly. He chuckled slightly too. " I don't like being nice to you"

" That's a shame..." He clicked his tongue " You'll soon be free, after college graduation, I'll......"

" Travel far away from here and invent the biggest computer and my name will be among the greatest historians and inventors in the world" She interrupted, laughing, and completing his sentence " come on Alex, I've heard this statement more than a thousand times already! " Alex laughed out too

" That's because I'm serious, and graduation is just a year ahead"

" I know lex . But you've been singing about it since forever!"

" I guess I'm a bit excited, you know, how far we've come?" He shrugged

" You're more than excited and it's okay to feel that way, but my ear hurts from hearing that already, I mean I'll be graduating too, remember?"

" I guess you're not as excited as I am . We're finally going to the outside world, we're adults now"

Sarah laughed out loudly, making Alex quite curious if he said anything funny

" What's intriguing?"

" You are.. did you just say we're adults now?"

" Yes"

" Come of it lex. Of course we're adults. You're 23, and I'm 22. What are we? Teenagers?"

His eyes turned to the other side, not facing her anymore. Guess he felt quite hurt by her laughter, but that wouldn't last long. She turned around and leaned over him getting on his side and putting her face to his

" Are you mad at me? Did I say something to hurt your feelings? "

" I'm fine Sarah"

He said that casually..

" Come on Lex... Seriously? You're taking my words serious? Since when? " She tickled him till he gave in, laughing hard " See... You can't stay mad at me for long" She felt quite proud saying that

" You bet... That's why you keep making me feel and look silly"

" Of course you're my silly little bestie, you're silly only for me"

He gave out a smile that melted hearts, making his blue eyes dim. His smile was radiant, and so was hers when she starred at him. If there was something about this two, it was the love and understanding they both had for each other and the ability to share each other's pains and express their feelings without any fear of judgement.

After a long time of silence, laying down on the sand and just staring at the stars Sarah broke the silence

" Do you really mean what you say Alex?"

"And what is that?"

" Your plans of leaving the country after graduation, taking a break from everyone and focusing on yourself and your goals alone?"

" You know it's my biggest dream and aspiration Sarah"

" What happens to me then?"

"What?"

" Our friendship. Our memories. Me. What happens to me in particular Lex. Will you forget all about me and leave? "

There was a hint of emotion in her voice, and he could feel it. She was getting emotional again, she was such a sweet and sensitive person and he knew the answer to her question should be one genuine enough not to hurt her feelings. He couldn't stand the sight of seeing Sarah hurt.

" Will you forget about me when you leave?" She repeated the question again, and this time it was like she was on the verge of tears. He moved closer to her and held her hands.

" Our friendship has been the greatest gift to me. I'd be a fool if I threw away all that to the wind. The funny moments, the silly ones. The pains, the tears. And remember the day I lit my shorts on fire when I tried making bacons for you?" She laughed out loudly, the scene replaying in her head, he smiled and continued "those are my favorite moments. And they'll always be with you no matter the distance between us"

A tear fell from her left eyes. He wiped it off with the palm of his right hand and raised her chin to face him " We're going to make the best of memories this remaining year before graduation .so that it'll always be a part of us to carry along. How about we start now?"

She nodded slightly and he pulled her into his arms, holding her tight to himself. He kissed her forehead gently, then whispering into her ears he said " I'll never forget about you Sarah, never"
