Chapter 1 He's late

It was a cold morning in mid November. I woke up to the sound of ny alarm blaring from my phone. I had stayed up very late doing my homework, and was not at all ready to wake up at 7 am.

"Ugh." I moaned, as I turned it off.

Suddenly, there was a knock on my door. "Sophie, do you need a ride to school?" My brother opened the door to my room and leaned against the doorframe.

"Yeah sure" I said, half asleep.

"Alright, Ethan is coming to pick us up in 30 minuted then."

"Ugh, fine" I said, as my brother walked out and shut the door behind him. I never cared much for Ethan, but he was my brothers best friend after all, so I had to tolerate being around him sometimes. And, I prefer getting a ride over taking the bus to school, so I guess it was fine after all.

I ate breakfast and got ready for school. Then I went into the livingroom and plopped down on the couch while waiting for our ride to arrive. It had been 30 minutes and there was no Ethan in sight. I went to find my brother, he was lying in his bed.

"Uhmmm weren't we supposed to be in the car by now?"

"Yeah, why?"

"Well, it has been 30 minutes now and school starts in 15 minutes"

"Jeez relax Sophie. He's on his way."

"I can't relax Will, I don't wanna be late for school and we will be if he isn't here within the next 5 minutes"

"You are such a pain in the ass sometimes, live a little" Will said with a smile. My big brother didn't really care much for consequences, unlike me.

Will came down the stairs 10 minutes later.

"He's here. Are you ready?"

"Yeah, I was ready 15 minutes ago."

Will rolled his eyes and put on his shoes. I opened the door to our driveway and Ethan was waiting for us in his black Audi.

"Nice car, did you find it in a ditch?" I teased.

"Ha ha, very funny Sophie. Get in, you're lucky I even let you sit in it." he said.

"Yeah Sophie, you should just be glad you get to catch a ride with the seniors" my brother chimed in.

'Yeah... very lucky...' I thought to myself.

My world revolved around Jax Harding, my older brother's captivating rockstar friend. From sixteen, I adored him; at eighteen, I clung to his casual promise: "When you're 22, maybe I'll settle down." That offhand comment became my life's beacon, guiding every choice, meticulously planning my twenty-second birthday as our destiny. But on that pivotal day in a Lower East Side bar, clutching my gift, my dream exploded. I overheard Jax' s cold voice: "Can't believe Savvy's showing up. She' s still hung up on that stupid thing I said." Then the crushing plot: "We' re gonna tell Savvy I' m engaged to Chloe, maybe even hint she' s pregnant. That should scare her off." My gift, my future, slipped from my numb fingers. I fled into the cold New York rain, devastated by betrayal. Later, Jax introduced Chloe as his "fiancée" while his bandmates mocked my "adorable crush"-he did nothing. As an art installation fell, he saved Chloe, abandoning me to severe injury. In the hospital, he came for "damage control," then shockingly shoved me into a fountain, leaving me to bleed, calling me a "jealous psycho." How could the man I loved, who once saved me, become this cruel and publicly humiliate me? Why was my devotion seen as an annoyance to be brutally extinguished with lies and assault? Was I just a problem, my loyalty met with hatred? I would not be his victim. Injured and betrayed, I made an unshakeable vow: I was done. I blocked his number and everyone connected to him, severing ties. This was not an escape; this was my rebirth. Florence awaited, a new life on my terms, unburdened by broken promises.
