Even though it all transpired more than five decades ago, the events are still lucid in my head. There is no denying I had something to do with what happened on that fateful day.
I was seventeen and at the Rougebeard's mansion.Hunter took me there, he was going to introduce me to his family and the board of Nobles. Sometimes I couldn't help but think it was all my fault, I should never have eavesdropped on the them. It was a risky thing to do, it would have cost my life if I was caught but on a second thought I was glad I heard everything.
" This is the verdict from the Honourable board of Nobles" A voice which I recognized as that of Galaga Graha spoke.
" I hereby announce that the Half-breed which his highness, Hunter Rougebeard the seventh has Proposed to the board as his potential Luna is deemed unfit to be an inch close to the Sacred throne let alone ascending it as her place" He spluttered with an audible excitement.
The room was silent for a few seconds until it erupted into thunderous applause followed by cheers of approval from everyone.
" What! " I could not see them but I could hear the dismay in Hunter's voice.
" I don't believe this!" He continued to complain in a loud voice.
He had always been good at hiding his feelings behind the nonchalant attitude he showed to everyone, but this was different and he could not pretend like he was not hurt.
My heart broke into tiny irredeemable pieces, I clenched my chest as my body leaned on the wall for support. I have been rejected, the entire Wolfdom thinks I'm unworthy of Hunter.
It became chaotic in there as everyone was trying to say something at thesame time, but none of their rambles mattered to me.
My mind felt numb but the pain in my heart kept on going. I felt my tears dripping down, I could not bring myself to move or react so I slowly slumped to sit on the floor, my feet staring straight ahead.
I heard footsteps approach the door and soon it flung open, I was supposed to run to avoid being caught but I stood there in what seemed like a brief state of trance.
" What do you think you are doing?" Hunter scolded in a low voice and took me by the hand.
I was too stiff and motionless to follow him so he dragged me along, trying to avoid being seen by anyone till we were safely out of the Court and in the green house.
" What do you think you were doing?" He shouted.
With teary eyes I blurted,
" They don't want me. They don't want us together"
" What?" His eyes changed, feeling oddly cold when they rested on me.
He rubbed his chin and threw back his head to laugh.
I looked at him, confused at how comfortable he was with the fact that we weren't going to tie the knot and live happily ever after.
" Is something wrong with you?" He barked, his face in a grimace.
I couldn't say anything so he went on.
" This is a game!" He dropped the bombshell.
And while I was trying to regroup he went on to add,
" Why are you acting like your life has come to an end?"
It was only then that I remembered that I was only working for him, the little kisses here and there, him coming into the kitchen to spank my butt while I cooked for us were all but a facade to make our relationship believable. I have been paid in full, and I used the money for me and Mark's new apartment.
But wait. What about the nights we've spent together, making love till the fall of dawn? What about the promises and sweet nonsense he was always whispering into my ears? He made my knees numb on countless occasions and all that was nothing but a game?
"Wait a minute" He smirked, interrupting my thought " Don't tell me you have fallen in love with me"
He paused to inspect my expression then bursted out in a mean raspy sound that was meant to be his laughter.
He laughed till he was clenching his stomach for air.
I sprung to my feet to leave, it was too much to handle, this was the most embarrassing predicament I have landed myself in.
" Don't go yet" He pulled me, and the next minute his phone was on my face, he was recording both of us, urging me to tell him why I was crying because a fake relationship ended.
I pushed him away and tried to run but I tripped on my gown, falling to the ground with a loud thud. He came over and continued recording. My hands were over...
Ding.
That's my phone, I take my hands off the computer and reach for it. There is a message from my husband.
" What happened? You are done writing for today?" Lindsay, my friend from highschool inquires.
" I forgot I have a date with Mon Chéri. Could you please continue from where I stopped?" I plead with her, and she looks away.
" But you don't have an outline on ground, where do I pick up from?" She tries to come up with an excuse not to help, she was never like this, but I guess old age comes with a lot of surprises.
" Start from anywhere, you know the story. You've been there all along"
Lindsay drags her feet to take over my spot at the system.
" Thank you Lin" I lean to kiss her on the cheeks but she wipes it off, cracking my old ass up.
I walk out of the room after grabbing a cream fur coat on my way out and lock the door behind me, not shutting it totally. My eyes peek through the small opening to ensure she is actually writing. Even at sixty-eight my friend still looks good, and her braids as neat as ever, except the ones she now carries stops at the middle of her back instead of her bum.
Lindsay taps the keypads gently, making me wonder what part of our story she will start from. I laugh in my head when the possibility of her writing about herself and Alejandro Galaga comes to mind.
" I am not a narcissist like you, be rest assured that I won't dominate your story" She blurts, reminding me that She is a Seer, stroke reader.
" That's not what I mean" I try to defend.
" If you want me to do you the honour of writing this story then just fuck off!" She curse.
" Sorry Ma'am" I say while giggling before leaving.
My shoes make a clacking sound as it contacts the glass staircase, making the man who has made my life complete swirl to look at me. I don't need anyone to say he is impressed with what he sees, his eyes says it all.
" You look ravishing" He takes my hand and plants a gentle kiss on it.
" You are devilishly handsome" I reciprocate, exaggerating it a little.
He smiles warmly.
" We'll be back before you know it, I know you are trying to tell your story"
" Don't worry about that, Lindsay is taking care of it" I say.
" Great! Let's go have some fun then" He takes my hand and we walk out to the driveway, where our driver is waiting.
