Chapter 1 A Bully In The Past

It was a sunny day at Welton High School. The birds were chirping in the trees and the hot weather didn't seem to discourage the students from roaming around the school

A group of girls were crowded behind a fuming girl. The girl had long black hair falling gracefully behind her back, a fair skin complexion, beautiful brown eyes, and cherry-colored lips pulled in a sneer

The young girl's brown eyes glared fiercely at the boy sitting on the bench in front of her. His head was bowed so that his face couldn't be seen

" Vaughn! You have a lot of guts!"

She clenched tightly to the white piece of paper that contained clean handwriting between her palms. It felt like she would rip into pieces in the next moment

" Emily calm down, don't create a scene"

Another beautiful girl approached the earlier placing a comforting hand on her shoulder as she cast a sympathetic glance at the black-haired boy

Honestly, she didn't understand what Emily was making a fuss about. Wasn't it just a love letter? Shouldn't she be flattered that despite her rudeness to him Vaughn would still like her? It was one thing to turn down the other's feelings calmly, but was there really a need to make such a scene and embarrass him

" Why should I calm down?! Lisa, isn't it an insult to me for him to write such a thing ?"

"you're being over dramatic. It's just a letter"

The black-haired girl of course didn't listen. She scrunched up the love letter and threw it at Vaughn

" Vaughn! The day I accept your love is the day the world falls apart!"

She turned around and angrily stumped away closely followed by the crowd of giggling girls

Lisa sighed and turned her gaze back at Vaughn, the boy's head was still downcast. It seemed like the events of just now hadn't registered to him at all

Lisa lowered herself to pick up the paper that had rolled down on the ground before sitting beside Vaughn

" Vaughn, you mustn't mind Emily. She doesn't mean what she said, she was just angry that's all"

" hm," Vaughn said dryly

" it's really sweet what you wrote to her" Lisa thought it was too bad Emily was too childish to see that. The girl was just like that sometimes. She barely noticed the good things in front of her until it was too late. Was there a chance Emily would find someone who loved her as much as Vaughn did?

" hm," Vaughn's response was still the same.

Lisa sighed. She took the lack of response from Vaughn as his mourning for rejection. love was such a complicated thing

A person like Vaughn who had been in love with Emily since kindergarten happened to be the exact person Emily hated the most. Just what kind of fate was it? Even though Emily had spent the best of their school time making Vaughn's life a living hell the handsome boy still loved her this much

She felt sympathetic for him. She hoped Emily wouldn't be so mean to the boy. It was already the last year of high school for them and Vaughn had grown the courage to confess after all, only to be harshly rejected

Lisa suddenly felt afraid. would she also fall for someone like this too? Would she also be rejected?! No way!! She was a lady, she was meant to be chased and not the other way around!

With that thought in mind, Lisa felt appeased. She made to comfort Vaughn again

" Don't worry Vaughn, I'll talk to Emily and,.."

But when she looked over to the person beside her Vaughn was gone

He must have left to go lick his wounds. Poor thing

Lisa stood up and walked off to go scold Emily, she completely forgot about the love letter which wasn't there anymore

That was eight years ago.....and now everything was coming to bite Emily in the back

* * *

Emily hadn't thought to put something more casual. How could she have remembered such a thing if she hadn't even known she would be attending a high-class celebrity after-party

She remembered waking up earlier in the morning with her phone ringing so loudly

It hadn't even occurred to her who would be so rude to wake her up at 5:AM. She hadn't felt like this since her college days, but it seemed that even after graduation she still had to rise so early

" What!?" She didn't bother being polite at all as she answered the phone.

" Are you seriously still sleeping you? Some of us are out working! I don't get why Dad still lets you live in the house when you should be living on your own! He was never so lenient with me!"

" quit whining" Emily fought back a yawn "What do you want Scarlet?"

Her sister didn't even hesitate to blare out her needs like she was some kind of queen that was made to be served

" I forgot to bring some dresses for the shoot. They're in my room so hurry up and bring them over"

" What!? Why do I have to bring them over? Where's Kevin? "

" he's busy Emily. My agent has a lot to do before the shoot so stop complaining and bring the things to me. Maybe you might score a job"

" No"

" lazy ass" Scarlet scolded cutting the call

Emily laid back for a couple of seconds thinking about what Scarlet had said. She didn't need her nosy sister telling her off all the time, she knew she needed to get a job soon. It had been over two years since she graduated college and three months since she quit her last job as an agent. The person she had been managing was easy to say the bitchiest girl to have existed. Nissa treated her more like a nanny than an agent. Maybe it was the fact that she had managed to land a popular album that made her think Emily's life revolved around her

It wasn't like Emily hadn't tried to make it work but in the end, it came down to either quitting her job or poisoning Nissa's meal and killing her. Emily decided the first option was the most logical

Now after a whole three months, she was still jobless. Maybe the fact that she hadn't been looking for a job may have been the major factor. Her parents hadn't bothered her much seeing how her last job had been a lot to handle.

But still, it was three months for goodness sake, it was enough goofing around especially since her sister's modeling career was booming and even Lisa had been cast in a lot of movies recently, basically, she was the only one being left behind

Grudgingly, Emily got off her bed and got herself ready. She threw on a jeans and top and tied her hair in a ponytail before finally making her way to Scarlet's room which was next door to hers

The dress her sister demanded was already packaged cleanly in her wardrobe. She picked up her phone to see that Scarlet had texted her an address.

" Are you going out?" Emily's mother asked seeing as she came downstairs dressed.

" yes Mom, Scarlet needs me to bring her something" Emily couldn't even try to mask her annoyance

Mrs. West smiled at her pulling her in a small hug. " be careful on the way honey. And make sure you eat breakfast"

" Kay Kay"

She walked out of her home with much gloom towards the place where she could hail a taxi. She had a feeling this was going to be an extremely tiring day

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

I woke up in a blindingly white hotel penthouse with a throbbing headache and the taste of betrayal in my mouth. The last thing I remembered was my stepsister, Cathie, handing me a flute of champagne at the charity gala with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. Now, a tall, dangerously handsome man walked out of the bathroom with a towel around his hips. On the nightstand sat a stack of hundred-dollar bills. My stepmother had finally done it—she drugged me and staged a scandal with a hired escort to destroy my reputation and my future. "Aisha! Is it true you spent the night with a gigolo?" The shouts of a dozen reporters echoed through the heavy oak door as camera flashes exploded through the peephole. My phone lit up with messages showing my bank accounts were already frozen. My father was invoking the 'morality clause' in my mother’s trust fund, and my fiancé had already released a statement dumping me to marry my stepsister instead. I was trapped, penniless, and being hunted by the press for a scandal I hadn't even participated in. My own family had sold me out for a payday, and the man standing in front of me was the only witness who could prove I was innocent—or finish me off for good. I didn't have time to cry. According to the fine print of the trust, I had thirty days to prove my "rehabilitation" through a legal marriage or I would lose everything. I tracked the man down to a coffee shop the next morning, watching him take a thick envelope of cash from a wealthy older woman. I sat across from him and slid a napkin with a $50,000 figure written on it. "I need a husband. Legal, paper-signed, and convincing." He looked at the number, then at me, a slow, crooked smile spreading across his face. I thought I was hiring a desperate gigolo to save my inheritance. I had no idea I was actually proposing to Dominic Fields, the reclusive billionaire shark who was currently planning a hostile takeover of my father’s entire empire.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband’s Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn’t find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn’t even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father’s legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn’s party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara’s health and managing every detail of Caden’s empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I’d drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause—if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I’d forgotten.
