Prologue

Maddy

There he is, over there, Cleo pointed across the quad. I followed her finger and saw Jett Decker talking to his group of friends. I had needed to talk to him the whole day. I had been trying to get a hold of him for about a week, but he hadnt returned any of my calls or texts. I had wanted to find out what happened that caused

I marched in his direction only stopping when I was right behind him. His arms were waving around like he was doing a puppet show that went along with the story that he was telling his friends. When I tapped him on the shoulder, he stopped talking and looked over his shoulder.

Jett, I said his name in a whisper because the look that was on his face wasnt one that was normal for him. He usually smiled wide at me. We were best friends and he had always been happy to see me. I need to talk to you.

Thats too bad, he shrugged and turned around. What the hell? That wasnt him ever. Im busy. He didnt say another word, and just turned around, picking up his conversation again. I tapped him on the shoulder again, but he didnt turn around again. The other guys looked at me. Some looks were pity looks a few, from his closer friends, were looks of confusion. So, I wasnt the only one that was confused with my best friends behavior. That was something then.

Jett, I said his name with a plea. He still didnt turn around. Fine, I huffed and stomped back to where Cleo was waiting for me.

What is going on there? She asked looking at Jetts back. I shrugged. Well, did he tell you why he got in trouble? Did he really get into a fight? Its so not like him.

I know its not, Cleo. He wouldnt talk to me though. Said he was busy. So, I have no idea what the hell happened, I looked back at Jett and watched him. He was still telling his story and he didnt seem like he had a care in the world. I dont know what is going on with him. I looked back at Cleo as she looped our arms together and she smiled at me.

Fuck him then, she pulled me toward the school. You dont need him. One day, hes going to need you and he will be sorry he treated you like a jerk. I looked back over my shoulder, silently hoping that she was right. Jett had been my best friend for forever and I hated to lose that but, it felt like that was exactly what was happening.

Being second best is practically in my DNA. My sister got the love, the attention, the spotlight. And now, even her damn fiancé. Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancé now-billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn't mind. I'd crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one? Wrong. One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That's when it hit me-he didn't love me. He didn't even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn't even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup. So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster-my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise. Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Enter him. Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I'd met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes. It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised. But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life. And, as it turned out, the best decision I'd ever made. Because my one-night stand isn't just some random guy. He's richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with. And now, he's not letting me go.
