Valerie was the middle child of a struggling family of 7 children. She was always bullied by the older children because of their jealousy and hatred toward her. When Valerie's father passed away 3 years ago, she had no idea her life at home was about to be worse than before. Valerie was a kind-natured girl with a heart of gold who cared a great deal about her family, but no matter what she did to please her mother she was always met with hatred. She often wonder if she belonged to this family, she didn't resemble anyone in the family and the only one who was ever truly nice to her was her father. Will things ever get better for Valerie?

Chapter 1 A day in the life of Valerie

When Valerie heard her alarm at 5 am she woke up instantly. She took the ladder down from the attic and quietly made her way to the kitchen. She started breakfast, first, she beat a total of 8 eggs to make scrambled eggs before taking out two toasters. She then turned the coffee machine on and cut up some fruit before making sandwiches for school lunches. She packed a total of 6 lunch boxes before putting a tray of bacon into the oven. It was now 6:15 am, she went into the twin's room first since they took the longest to get out of bed.

Next, she went to each of her older sibling's rooms to wake them up. Lastly, she woke up the sister one year younger than her. She went back to the kitchen to put the toast on before putting the cereals, bowls, sugar, and milk on the table. Her mother was woken up by the smell of coffee, she came downstairs and asked, "why isn't my coffee ready yet?"

"Sorry mom I thought you said you wanted to sleep in this morning, I will have it ready in 2 minutes" replied Valerie with a smile.

"Be quick about it! Are my clothes ready? Where is everyone?" asked Suzana with a look of impatience

"They will be down soon mom; I will wake them up again. Your clothes have been ironed and put in your bathroom, here is your coffee!"

Valerie waited as her mother took a sip of the coffee, she waited for feedback, but her mom raised her head and asked "what are you waiting for? get the kids down here or I will be late to work"

She rushed upstairs and was a little more forceful about waking them up this time, those who brushed her off she stated, "If you're not ready before mom leaves, you will be catching the bus and I will take your spot in the car!" This always worked as they knew how hard it was to get to school by bus. When Valerie came back to the kitchen the twins were seated and eating cereal. She turned the stove on to cook the eggs and put another 4 slices of bread into the toaster. Soon enough everyone was sitting at the dining table eating cereal. She finished cooking the eggs, took the bacon out of the oven and buttered all the toast before placing it all on the table. The only time she had to have a shower was while everyone was eating so she left the kitchen to get ready for school but before she even made it out of the dining room her older brother Jacob (Jack) asked her to bring orange juice to the table. The same orange juice her older sister Jess asked her 2 minutes ago to put away in the fridge, which he did not protest. She took the orange juice out of the fridge and left as quickly as she could. She was limited to 10 minutes in the shower a day, so she had a 3-minute shower and used the other 2 minutes to dry herself and change into her uniform. As you can gather getting ready in 5 minutes is quite a sport, but she had no choice, or she would go to school smelling like the food she had cooked in the morning or even worse miss the bus to school.

VALERIE! VALERIE!

She rushed to the kitchen "yes mom"

"Hurry up and get the twins ready!"

"John! David let's go and get ready!" said Valerie as she grabs both their hands.

The twins were very cheeky and always tried to make things difficult for her, but she always outmaneuvered them, 15 minutes later the twins were ready and watching TV. Valerie hurriedly cleaned the table, packed the leftovers for her lunch and washed the dishes. She took the chicken out of the freezer and put it in the fridge for dinner tonight. She then checked the time and she had 5 minutes to be at the bus stop or she would go late to school. She ran out of the house before anyone could ask anything of her. She was 1 minute late for the bus stop, but the bus driver had waited for her. Valerie entered the bus and sat down while huffing and puffing. She did not even notice that the sole of one of her shoes was loose at the front. The bus stopped at many stops on the way to school and was now full of students from her school but none of them spoke to her. She was a bit of an outcast, although she was incredibly beautiful and smart, she was always looked down on by the other students for being poor. Jess, her older sister, always bullied her at school and incited others to bully her. She was called the Cinderella of Polaire public school, this was the name her sister came up with when she said "how will your prince charming ever find you if you're always wearing other people's shoes" when she found her reading the book "Cinderella" at the library, this spread around the school like wildfire. Valerie sat down in front of the school to fix her shoe with superglue and waited 3 minutes for it to dry before entering but those 3 minutes felt like forever as the other students walked by with looks of disgust and laughter as they entered the school. This used to upset her 3 years ago, but she does not care anymore. All she wants is to finish school with good results, get a good-paying job to help her mom and finally make her mother proud. Valerie went to her first class which was advanced mathematics, she loved numbers because they made more sense to her than anything in her life. During the lesson her stomach would growl loudly and aggressively, she was so embarrassed, that she did not know what to do or say so she continued her work without making eye contact with anyone. Valerie had one more year of school and she would finish before her older sister and finish school the same year as the eldest son in the Han family.
