Chapter 1 Hard life to live

I wake up from another nightmare. Sweating, cold chills, and pain; but I don't let out a sound. If I did, I know I'd be in more pain. Looking at the clock I see I should've been up long before now. They'll be so angry if breakfast isn't out by 5AM. I rush around throwing on my dirty and stained dress and put my long brown hair into a braid. Sliding on the brown flat sandals they've given me I race down to the kitchen and hurriedly start heating up the griddle for bacon, eggs, pancakes, and biscuits. It takes a lot to feed over 200 wolves.

Our pack is one of the largest in the country totaling over 1,000 wolves along our territory. It was a very happy place for us all before.. before we lost them and they blamed me. I guess I understand why they would blame me. It was a very gruesome scene to run across. My 3 brothers were gone that day, training. I'd just walked inside from the pup house school when I heard a terrifying growl. The scene in front of me was straight out of a horror movie with a huge black wolf had his sharp claws and teeth still sunk into my mother's neck. One glance to the right showed me my fathers body lying in front of the fireplace, already gone. Since I was only 14 at the time, I couldn't shift yet, and my only thought was my parents. Instead of running, I knelt down and cried while awaiting my doom. It was a long time before I realized I was alone and the wolf was gone. Who was he? Why did he kill my parents? Most confusing and consuming, why did he leave me alive? Why am I alive?

My world revolved around Jax Harding, my older brother's captivating rockstar friend. From sixteen, I adored him; at eighteen, I clung to his casual promise: "When you're 22, maybe I'll settle down." That offhand comment became my life's beacon, guiding every choice, meticulously planning my twenty-second birthday as our destiny. But on that pivotal day in a Lower East Side bar, clutching my gift, my dream exploded. I overheard Jax' s cold voice: "Can't believe Savvy's showing up. She' s still hung up on that stupid thing I said." Then the crushing plot: "We' re gonna tell Savvy I' m engaged to Chloe, maybe even hint she' s pregnant. That should scare her off." My gift, my future, slipped from my numb fingers. I fled into the cold New York rain, devastated by betrayal. Later, Jax introduced Chloe as his "fiancée" while his bandmates mocked my "adorable crush"-he did nothing. As an art installation fell, he saved Chloe, abandoning me to severe injury. In the hospital, he came for "damage control," then shockingly shoved me into a fountain, leaving me to bleed, calling me a "jealous psycho." How could the man I loved, who once saved me, become this cruel and publicly humiliate me? Why was my devotion seen as an annoyance to be brutally extinguished with lies and assault? Was I just a problem, my loyalty met with hatred? I would not be his victim. Injured and betrayed, I made an unshakeable vow: I was done. I blocked his number and everyone connected to him, severing ties. This was not an escape; this was my rebirth. Florence awaited, a new life on my terms, unburdened by broken promises.
