Chapter 1 Prologue

"I can't believe summer break is over," Mila said to her best friend, Willow over the phone.

"Tell me about it, at least we've got dance tryouts to look out for." Willow reminded.

"Yeah, when does Khalil gets back, by the way, I've missed him," Mila asked picking up some stationery from the book shop at the mall.

"He said he and his boyfriend Jake would be here in two days, I like how his parents supported him when he came out as gay," Willow told.

"Yeah, they're good parents... so he's missing the first day of school?" Mila voiced out.

"Mila honey, school starts in two days time today is Saturday." Willow chuckled at her friend's forgetfulness.

"Ah, that's why forever 21 is full, I better go get some outfits for school before the best ones run out of stock," she said walking to the shop.

"Actually, I'm in there." Willow spotted her friend as she waved to her. Mila dropped the call and then walked towards her friend muttering a few 'sorrys' as she made her way through.

Willow hugged her friend tight even though they hang out together during the summer break. They had fun travelling together and visiting beautiful sceneries.

Mila's parents were both workaholics so it was most at times her and her caretaker, Naya. Mila's elder twin brothers were in the university, far from California. She only got to see them during Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

Willow's mom was also a workaholic like Mila's parents. Her dad had eloped with their maid to start a family, not that she blamed him but her mom didn't have much time for him. Willow's younger sister, Aaliyah, was starting her freshman year in high school.

"I picked a couple of dresses already," Willow admitted.

"Hey, Aaliyah." Mila side hugged her.

"It's good to see you Mila, but I gotta go. I'm meeting Kiera at the food court, bye sis." she waved both of them as she walked out.

"So where were we?" Mila asked.

I watched my husband sign the papers that would end our marriage while he was busy texting the woman he actually loved. He didn't even glance at the header. He just scribbled the sharp, jagged signature that had signed death warrants for half of New York, tossed the file onto the passenger seat, and tapped his screen again. "Done," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. That was Dante Moretti. The Underboss. A man who could smell a lie from a mile away but couldn't see that his wife had just handed him an annulment decree disguised beneath a stack of mundane logistics reports. For three years, I scrubbed his blood out of his shirts. I saved his family's alliance when his ex, Sofia, ran off with a civilian. In return, he treated me like furniture. He left me in the rain to save Sofia from a broken nail. He left me alone on my birthday to drink champagne on a yacht with her. He even handed me a glass of whiskey—her favorite drink—forgetting that I despised the taste. I was merely a placeholder. A ghost in my own home. So, I stopped waiting. I burned our wedding portrait in the fireplace, left my platinum ring in the ashes, and boarded a one-way flight to San Francisco. I thought I was finally free. I thought I had escaped the cage. But I underestimated Dante. When he finally opened that file weeks later and realized he had signed away his wife without looking, the Reaper didn't accept defeat. He burned down the world to find me, obsessed with reclaiming the woman he had already thrown away.

Rain hammered against the asphalt as my sedan spun violently into the guardrail on the I-95. Blood trickled down my temple, stinging my eyes, while the rhythmic slap of the windshield wipers mocked my panic. Trembling, I dialed my husband, Clive. His executive assistant answered instead, his voice professional and utterly cold. "Mr. Wilson says to stop the theatrics. He said, and I quote, 'Hang up. Tell her I don’t have time for her emotional blackmail tonight.'" The line went dead while I was still trapped in the wreckage. At the hospital, I watched the news footage of Clive wrapping his jacket around his "fragile" ex-girlfriend, Angelena, shielding her from the storm I was currently bleeding in. When I returned to our penthouse, I found a prenatal ultrasound in his suit pocket, dated the day he claimed to be on a business trip. Instead of an apology, Clive met me with a sneer. He told me I was nothing but an "expensive decoration" his father bought to make him look stable. He froze my bank accounts and cut off my cards, waiting for the hunger to drive me back to his feet. I stared at the man I had loved for four years, realizing he didn't just want a wife; he wanted a prop he could switch off. He thought he could starve me into submission while he played father to another woman's child. But Clive forgot one thing. Before I was his trophy wife, I was Starfall—the legendary voice actress who vanished at the height of her fame. "I'm not jealous, Clive. I'm done." I grabbed my old microphone and walked out. I’m not just leaving him; I’m taking the lead role in the biggest saga in Hollywood—the one Angelena is desperate for. This time, the "decoration" is going to burn his world down.
