What could go wrong when you have got a computer geek friend like Trevor who can fix everything? Candice was happy that her stepmother's plan to marry her off to an older rich man had failed. The marriage certificate she produced was proof of her marriage to her secret boyfriend. The husband according to Trevor was a gay man who would never dream of getting married. Everything was going to be deleted after a year and nobody would know even the husband. Now one evening a handsome stranger stood at Candice's door looking for Candice Stevens. "I'm sorry.... you have the wrong person I'm Candice Walters. "That was before you got married. I'm Clive Stevens your husband. Immediately Clive started playing the husband role without giving Candice a chance to explain herself. Is he going to let it go or does he have other plans for Candice?

Chapter 1 Already married

"You are already married Mr. Stevens." The man sitting on the other end of the desk told the unsuspecting Clive. Earlier in the morning his private investigator had asked him to meet him at the marriage registration office. The investigator had informed Clive about some important information that he wanted him to hear for himself.

Clive had thought that the investigator was playing the usual tricks of trying to get more money from him. He had asked him to investigate the woman whom his parents were so eager for him to marry. He was hoping to find the woman's dirt not the other way around.

"Whom am I supposed to be married to and when?" The shocked Clive asked grabbing the documents from the man's hand. He read through the documents carefully and his calmness surprised his private investigator.

"Are you ok Clive?" Gordon the investigator asked. He was used to Clive shouting and throwing things everywhere if things did not go his way. He was now wondering what was on his friend's mind. The two had become good friends after Gordon exposed a rival hotel chain that was spreading false rumors about one of Clive's hotels.

'Could it be that he knows this woman?' Gordon was now thinking to himself. This calmness was now making him uncomfortable.

"Gordon, investigate this woman now. I'm only giving you three days otherwise I will not pay you." Clive demanded as he stood up and placed the documents on Gordon's lap. He left without saying anything more. Gordon was stunned but knew that he had to do it.

At twenty-nine Clive had inherited his father's company and also owned his own chain of hotels. He was regarded as one of the top ten young rich and handsome men. A few people knew about Clive's personal life as he tried so hard to keep it private.

Clive was the only son of Mathew and Jane Stevens. His siblings were twenty-one-year-old twin sisters Thea and Tia who were attending university in London. Clive was very protective of his sisters and was in contact with them nearly every day.

His father started his business thirty years ago with his best friend Paul Marson. After ten years in partnership the two men decided to go separate ways but remained best friends. It was during this friendship that the two men agreed that their two children Clive and Julie should get married.

Julie was an only child and had her own fashion house. She was well known in the fashion industry. Unlike Clive she always wanted the media to know what was happening in her life. She knew very well that Clive didn't like her but was willing to get him at any cost.

Clive and Julie were childhood friends, but their friendship started fading away in their early twenties. It was because Clive had noticed that Julie was really into this arrangement between the two fathers.

After meeting with Gordon, Clive went back to his office. He could not take the name Candice Walters out of his mind. His marriage to this twenty-four-year-old Candice had been registered eight months ago. All details on the marriage certificate including his address were correct so it was definitely him. His deep thoughts were disturbed by the knock on his door.

"Mr. Stevens you have a visitor." Cindy Clive's secretary announced. It's Miss Marson should I let her in." Cindy knew that her boss was not interested in Julie, but she was just doing her job.

Before he could give a response Julie pushed her way into Clive's office. Clive was now typing on his laptop not even looking at her.

"Hello Clive." She greeted him before taking a seat opposite to him.

"What brings you here Julie?" He asked without looking up. He could not hide his annoyance with this woman's presence.

"Just wanted to check how my fiancée is doing. You have not been answering my calls or replying to my messages." Julie said in a polite voice and had a smile on her face.

"How many times do I have to tell you that I am not your fiancée?" Clive asked with a stern voice.

Clive had stopped answering Julie's calls and did not bother to read her messages. He had been polite to Julie but decided to be firm with her when he realised how clingy she was becoming. He was suspecting that she was up to something that is why he had asked his friend to investigate her.

"Clive, everything was decided a long time ago so whether you like it or not I will be your wife." She said confidently.

Clive sighed and then spoke. "Julie I am very busy, and I am sure you have other things to do." He stood up and opened the door for her to leave.

"I am having dinner with your parents to finilise the wedding. You can join us if you want." Julie said and walked out.

Clive was dumbfounded. He could not understand why Julie was so eager to marry someone who clearly was not attracted to her. He was angry with his father for trying to honor such a stupid promise. His mother had tried and failed to reason with his father after Clive had told them that he was not interested in Julie.

Clive decided to go home early. His day had been shuttered by the emergence of Julie in his office. After she had left, he could not concentrate on his work. He kept on replaying the conversation he had with Julie. He knew she was very manipulative, and he was not sure what her next move was. She was no longer the Julie he had been friends with in his teens.

He was about to take a shower when he got a call. Checking the caller, he noticed it was his father. He knew want he wanted so he let the phone ring. Within a few seconds another call came through and this time it was his mother.

He hesitantly took the call. "Mum if it is about your dinner with Julie I'm not interested. You planned without consulting me so the three of you should enjoy."

Although he was aware that his mother supported him, Clive was not in the mood to entertain any discussion that involved Julie.

"Son, at least you should come and then we can talk about it in a civil way." Jane tried to reason with her son.

"There is nothing to talk about mum, dad has made up his mind and all I can say is that I am not part of that." He was firm with his response. He felt sorry for his mother who was also an unwilling participant. The mother and son briefly talked, and they concluded their conversation. He took a shower and ordered takeaway ate and retired to bed early.

My stepmother sold me like a piece of inventory to a man known for breaking people just to plug the financial crater my father left behind. I was delivered to the Morton estate in the middle of a freezing storm, stripped of my phone, and told that if I didn't make myself useful, my senile grandfather would be evicted from his care facility by noon. The master of the house, Adonis Morton IV, was a monster living in a silent mausoleum, driven to the brink of madness by a sensory condition that turned every sound into a physical assault. When I was forced into his suite to serve him, he didn't see a human being; he saw a source of agony. In a fit of animalistic rage, he pinned me to the wall and nearly strangled me to death just for the sound of a shattering teacup. I only survived by using my grandfather’s secret herbal blends and pressure-point therapy to force his overactive nervous system into a drugged sleep. But saving him was my greatest mistake. Instead of letting me go, Adonis moved me into a guest suite connected to his own bedroom by a hidden door. He didn't just want me as a servant; he needed me as a human white-noise machine to drown out the demons in his head. The nightmare deepened when he took the promissory note that defined my freedom and tore it into confetti. By destroying the debt, he destroyed my exit strategy. He replaced my maid’s uniform with a silver silk dress that clung to my skin but did nothing to hide the dark, ugly bruises his fingers had left on my neck. He branded me as his "primary care associate," a title that was nothing more than a gilded cage. I felt a sickening sense of injustice as he forced me to sign a contract that banned me from contacting other men and required me to sleep wherever he slept. He looked at me with a possessive heat, calling me his "medication" rather than a woman. My family had sold my body, but Adonis Morton was intent on owning my very presence, using my grandfather’s medical bills as a leash to keep me within twenty feet of him at all times. Standing in a neglected greenhouse with mud staining my expensive silk, I realized I was no longer a victim waiting for rescue. If I was going to be his medication, I would learn how to be his cure—or his undoing. I began clearing the weeds with a cold, calculated frenzy, determined to turn this prison into my laboratory. He thinks he has trapped a helpless girl, but I am going to pry open the cracks in his stone walls until his entire world comes crashing down.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I watched my husband sign the papers that would end our marriage while he was busy texting the woman he actually loved. He didn't even glance at the header. He just scribbled the sharp, jagged signature that had signed death warrants for half of New York, tossed the file onto the passenger seat, and tapped his screen again. "Done," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. That was Dante Moretti. The Underboss. A man who could smell a lie from a mile away but couldn't see that his wife had just handed him an annulment decree disguised beneath a stack of mundane logistics reports. For three years, I scrubbed his blood out of his shirts. I saved his family's alliance when his ex, Sofia, ran off with a civilian. In return, he treated me like furniture. He left me in the rain to save Sofia from a broken nail. He left me alone on my birthday to drink champagne on a yacht with her. He even handed me a glass of whiskey—her favorite drink—forgetting that I despised the taste. I was merely a placeholder. A ghost in my own home. So, I stopped waiting. I burned our wedding portrait in the fireplace, left my platinum ring in the ashes, and boarded a one-way flight to San Francisco. I thought I was finally free. I thought I had escaped the cage. But I underestimated Dante. When he finally opened that file weeks later and realized he had signed away his wife without looking, the Reaper didn't accept defeat. He burned down the world to find me, obsessed with reclaiming the woman he had already thrown away.
