Alex was standing in a VIP bridal boutique, getting fitted for a million-dollar custom gown paid for by her billionaire tech CEO fiancé. They had been together for eight years, building his empire from a cold studio apartment to Wall Street. But while she was suffocating in French lace, her phone buzzed with an Instagram post from his executive assistant, Hollie. It was a beach photo in St. Barts. In the reflection of Hollie's sunglasses, Alex clearly saw Basil-the man who had just texted her that he was trapped in a New York blizzard for emergency board meetings. When Basil returned, he didn't even try to hide his betrayal. At a high-society gala, Alex caught them making out behind a velvet curtain, with Basil feeding Hollie dessert and promising her executive suites. The final straw came during her last dress fitting. Basil brought Hollie along, mocked Alex's custom gown as boring, and bought Hollie an ultra-revealing bridal sample to try on right in front of her. When Alex threw a glass of champagne in the assistant's face, Basil flew into a rage. He shoved Alex violently to the marble floor, severely injuring her elbow. "Get on your knees and apologize," he snarled, standing over her. "Or the wedding is off. Let's see how long you survive in this city without my capital." He truly believed that eight years of her silent sacrifices and brilliant legal work were just stepping stones for his ego. He thought that without his wealth, she was just an insecure, helpless woman who would cry in an empty mansion and beg for his mercy. But Basil forgot one crucial detail: Alex wasn't just his fiancée, she was an apex corporate litigator. She didn't shed a single tear. Instead, she packed her bags, threw his first promise ring down the trash chute, and walked into his favorite Michelin-starred restaurant three days later to serve him with papers for a total asset partition.

Too Late For Regret: The Unbothered Bride Chapter 1

"Hold your breath for three seconds, Miss Marsh. The waistline on this French lace is tailored to the exact millimeter."

The salon director knelt on the plush carpet of the Beverly Hills bridal boutique, her manicured fingers carefully smoothing out the heavy satin train.

Alex stared at her reflection in the gilded floor-to-ceiling mirror.

The custom gown weighed at least twenty pounds. The heavy silk and hand-embroidered pearls pressed down on her shoulders, feeling less like a wedding dress and more like a suit of ceremonial armor.

"Mr. Mcleod truly spared no expense," the director gushed, looking up at her with practiced admiration.

"He bought out the entire Parisian workshop's schedule for six months just for this veil. A billionaire tech titan marrying California's sharpest litigator... everyone in town is calling it the wedding of the decade!"

Alex managed a polite, faint curve of her lips. "Thank you."

But her gaze drifted past her own reflection, landing on the empty leather sofa in the private VIP suite.

An untouched espresso had long gone cold on the marble table.

She was trying on the most expensive dress of her life, stepping into her supposed "happily ever after," and she was doing it completely alone. Basil hadn't even bothered to send flowers.

She lifted her left arm, her fingers naturally tracing the worn silver buckle of the cheap leather watch on her wrist.

It was an entry-level timepiece Basil had given her eight years ago. Back then, they were just two broke college students eating instant noodles while he pitched his first failed startup in a dirty garage.

Long before Mcleod Dynamics became a multi-billion-dollar NASDAQ giant. She had worn it every single day since, a symbol of their shared struggle.

Suddenly, her phone vibrated sharply on the vanity table.

Alex stepped forward, the heavy lace rustling heavily against the podium, and picked it up.

It was an Instagram notification. Hollie Mathis, Basil's twenty-something executive assistant, had just posted a new update.

The photo featured a sun-drenched private beach, crystal-clear turquoise water, and two glasses of champagne on a wooden table. The caption was simple and boastful: The perfect romantic getaway.

Alex's eyes swept over the golden sand, but her attention instantly locked onto the oversized designer sunglasses resting on the beach towel in the foreground.

A strange prickle of intuition hit the back of her neck. She pinched the screen to zoom in.

In the polarized reflection of the dark lenses, a man stood holding two tropical drinks.

He wore a custom dark-brown linen shirt with the collar undone. And just beneath his right earlobe, a distinct, tiny dark mole was sharply visible in the bright Caribbean glare.

Alex's chest violently seized. All the air evaporated from her lungs.

Her fingertips turned ice-cold, gripping the edges of the phone so hard her knuckles went white. That mole. That custom shirt she had picked out for him for his birthday.

Trembling, she swiped out of Instagram and opened her text thread with Basil.

His last message, sent just five hours ago, stared back at her in cruel black text:

Severe blizzard in New York. All flights grounded. Stuck in a freezing hotel with the board. Don't wait up for me.

The soft, romantic chandeliers of the boutique suddenly felt blinding, burning the back of her eyes.

Eight years, she thought, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. Eight years of building his empire from the ground up, of sacrificing her weekends to draft his corporate bylaws, of loving him when he was absolutely nothing.

And he was trading their entire history for a beach trip with a girl who barely knew how to use a copy machine?

Alex closed her eyes, forcing down the wave of absolute nausea.

One last chance, she told herself. As a litigator, she needed verbal confirmation. She needed him to tell her the truth.

She tapped his contact name and raised the phone to her ear.

The line rang four long times. Then, the connection clicked open.

A faint, rhythmic whisper of ocean waves drifted through the receiver, followed immediately by a panicked rustling sound and a forced, dry cough.

"Alex?" Basil's deep voice came through. It wasn't the warm, apologetic voice of a man who missed his fiancée. It was laden with calculated impatience. "What is it?"

Alex swallowed the painful lump in her throat, keeping her voice terrifyingly calm. "I'm at the bridal salon, Basil. Trying on the final dress. I just wanted to hear your voice... How is New York?"

Tell me, she begged silently. Just tell me you're not in a blizzard. Tell me you made a mistake.

"It's a complete nightmare," Basil replied smoothly, his tone dripping with the arrogant authority he usually reserved for his underlings.

"I told you, the flights are grounded. I'm looking out the window at two feet of snow. The board members are waiting for me to review the quarterly numbers, and you're calling me about a dress?"

In the background, a faint, unmistakably female giggle drifted across the line.

Alex's blood turned into absolute ice.

"Who is laughing in the background, Basil?" she asked softly.

He didn't miss a beat. "It's a waitress in the hotel lobby. Listen, Alex, you need to stop being so needy. I'm out here freezing and working my ass off for our future, and you're fussing over wedding details. Just put it on the Amex card and let me work. I don't have time for this."

Our future.

He was lecturing her about their future while baking in the Caribbean sun with his assistant.

The heartbreak that had been suffocating her instantly shattered, crystallizing into something entirely different. Cold, pure, undeniable rage.

"I see," Alex said, her voice dropping into a flat, lethal chill. "Don't work too hard in the snow, Basil."

"Right. Bye."

He hung up.

"Miss Marsh?" The boutique director noticed her frozen posture. She stepped forward, her eyes wide with concern. "Are you feeling faint? Should I get you some warm water? The dress is quite heavy..."

Alex looked back at the gilded mirror. The pure white lace no longer looked like a bridal gown. It looked like an expensive, suffocating cage built entirely on lies.

"No," Alex said.

She reached behind her back, gripped the pull tab of the concealed zipper, and yanked it all the way down in one sharp, violent motion.

The director gasped in horror, rushing forward. "Miss Marsh! Please, the delicate hand-sewn lace-let me help you! You'll tear it!"

"I've got it," Alex said.

She let the heavy silk pool onto the floor like dirty snow and stepped right out of it.

She walked straight to the changing stall, stripped off the million-dollar lie, and dressed in her tailored charcoal-gray power suit. She smoothed the sharp creases of her cuffs, picked up her handbag, and pulled a matte-black credit card from her wallet.

"Charge the remaining balance to this," Alex told the director, slapping the card onto the marble counter.

The director accepted it with trembling hands, visibly terrified by the sudden, terrifying shift in her aura. "S-shall we deliver the completed gown directly to the Mcleod estate in Bel-Air?"

Alex paused, glancing at the empty, headless mannequin.

"Keep it," she said evenly. "Or burn it. I don't care. Just don't ship it to me."

She pushed through the heavy glass doors of the boutique and stepped out into the dry, sharp heat of the California afternoon.

As Alex unlocked her car, she checked Hollie's Instagram one last time. She had just posted a new story: two champagne flutes clinking together with a heart emoji.

Alex gripped the leather steering wheel. Basil Mcleod thought she was just some obedient corporate wife who would turn a blind eye as long as he paid the bills.

He had clearly forgotten who he was dealing with. Before she was his fiancée, she was the most ruthless, undefeated corporate litigator in Los Angeles. And if he wanted to play games with her life, she was going to make sure he lost everything.
