I am a wolfless Omega, an outcast without a wolf form in a clan that worships beast blood.

In my past life, I was framed for poisoning the clan nobles. Betrayed by those I trusted, cast aside by my fated Alpha, I endured endless slander before being dragged to the pyre to burn alive.

A roar from a crowd reaches my ears, a cacophony of hateful shouts. "Burn the witch!" "Murderer!" "She tried to kill the Alpha's brother!"

A path parts in the crowd, people scrambling back as if from a predator.

A towering figure emerges from the twilight, moving with a fluid grace that belies his immense size. Even from here, I can feel the raw power radiating from him. He's dressed in dark, severe clothing that accentuates his broad shoulders. His black hair is short, his features chiseled and merciless.

His eyes, the color of molten gold, find mine across the square. There's no pity in them. Only cold, hard judgment.

A pathetic, wounded whimper rises from deep within me. It is my own soul‑deep longing and terror for my fated Mate, Donovan; feelings that haunted me even in my past life's final moments. His golden eyes stay locked on me, searching, assessing. He's looking for guilt, for fear, for the cowering Omega he expects.

I refuse to give it to him. I lift my chin, meeting his gaze without flinching, my own eyes, which I now know are a startling violet, holding a challenge.

A flicker of something-surprise? annoyance?-crosses his impassive face. It's gone in an instant.

He doesn't speak. He just gives a slight, almost imperceptible nod to the executioners.

My heart plummets. That's it? No trial, no questions? Just a nod to kill the woman he's fated to?

But the executioners don't light the pyre. Instead, one of them says,"The Alpha has judged. She will remain here until dawn. Let her contemplate her sins before the Moon Goddess."

Donovan turns his back on me, a dismissal more profound than any curse, and melts back into the crowd, which parts for him like the sea.

The crowd disperses, leaving me alone in the chilling night, tied to a post, the unlit pyre a promise of my fate at sunrise.
