My uncle kicked me and my little brother out into the freezing rain, stripping away everything we owned. He transferred my parents' entire bank vault to my "perfect" cousin Emmie, claiming my expulsion from the academy made me a disgrace. He threw a pathetic pouch of coins at my feet as "charity" and ordered me never to use the family name again. Emmie put on a fake show of pity, though her eyes gleamed with triumphant delight as her house-elves moved her things into my parents' room. "Sister, where will you and Greyson go in this rain?" In the eyes of the magical elite, I was just a destitute, ruined orphan dragging a kid along. At the underground auction, the pure-bloods laughed at my faded robes, mocking me when I dared to bid against Burrell Black, the wealthiest heir in our world. A group of drunken aristocrats even cornered us in an alley, drawing their wands and thinking they could easily bully a penniless girl. They all thought I was a powerless outcast who had lost everything. They didn't know my expulsion was just because I got bored, or that I was actually "Silver Fox," the uncrowned king of the curse-breaking underworld. I casually disarmed all five pure-bloods in under two seconds with a flick of a cheap willow wand. As Burrell Black watched me from his VIP balcony in absolute shock, I smiled. It was time to get back what was ours.

Penniless Girl? She Is The Genius Healer Chapter 1

Cristina Acosta POV:

"Take the money, Cristina, and don't make this harder than it needs to be."

My uncle, Hobart Marks, didn't even look up from the parchment spread across his massive ebony desk. He pushed a small, cheap velvet pouch of Glowgold across the polished wood with the tip of his finger. The sound was cheap, insulting. Beside him, his assistant, Mr. Finch, stood like a loyal hound, eyeing us with blatant disdain.

I leaned against the heavy oak chair, my hands jammed into the pockets of my faded jeans. I didn't let go of my seven-year-old brother's hand. Greyson's fingers were icy, gripping the back of my shirt so tightly his knuckles were white.

"Your father's sudden death left debts, and your mother's inheritance is now under my legal administration," Hobart said, his voice coated in a false generosity that made my stomach clench. "Considering your disgraceful suspension from Stellaria Academy, your penchant for illegal street dueling, and then there's Greyson..."

Hobart let out a dismissive snort. "My political future can't afford any blemishes. Adopting Emmie Ruiz is far more beneficial for me. There are five hundred Glowgold coins in that pouch. You two need to cross the barrier into the mortal world by tonight. Consider your connection to this house severed."

"Dignity?" Hobart scoffed before I could speak. "You are practically a street urchin. And Greyson hasn't even displayed his core awakening. How do you plan to feed him? On empty pride?"

Greyson peeked out from behind me, bared his teeth at Hobart like an angry little wolf, and muttered, "Idiot."

I pressed a hand on his head, a silent command to be quiet.

Before Hobart could react to the insult, the study doors swung open. Emmie Ruiz, my biological younger sister, walked in with an angelic, practiced smile. She wore the sky-blue trimmed robes of Azure Gale House, trailing a faint scent of expensive floral enchantments.

"Oh, Sister," Emmie purred, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Why are you making this so difficult for Uncle Hobart? He spent all morning talking to the Magical Congress clerks just to secure that settlement for you. He only wants what is best for you and little Greyson."

She stepped forward, extending two manicured hands toward my forearm as if to offer comfort. I stepped sideways without blinking.

Emmie's hands caught empty air. Her polished smile twitched, a hairline crack showing through her practiced veneer before she smoothly lowered her arms. She had been thoroughly brainwashed, convinced she was the only true heir worthy of high society.

Hobart looked at Emmie, his hard features softening instantly into doting pride. "You don't need to waste your breath on them, Emmie. Once your placement at Azure Gale is finalized, your late mother's entire estate and vaults will pass entirely to your name. You are the only true heir worthy of being adopted into the Marks lineage."

I let out a short, quiet laugh. In the dead quiet of the drawing room, that sound hit like glass shattering on stone.

"Something amusing, Cristina?" Hobart barked.

"Very," I said, my voice dropping into a cold, mocking register. I looked straight at Emmie's proud, arrogant face. "I'm laughing at you, Emmie. You actually believe he loves you? You are completely blind to the fact that he only adopted you because you are docile and easily manipulated. You're nothing but a convenient puppet for him to legally swallow our mother's massive hidden inheritance, and yet you're so foolishly self-important, parading around like you've won a prize."

Emmie's angelic facade shattered instantly. Her face turned pale with utter humiliation, her hands trembling. "You... you're just jealous!" she shrieked, her voice cracking.

"Jealous of a puppet with a collar? Hardly." I straightened up, my magical aura flaring just enough to make the temperature in the room plummet. Emmie gasped, taking a fearful step back. I walked toward the heavy ebony desk. I didn't touch the velvet pouch with reverence. Instead, I slammed my palm against the edge of the table. A silent wave of kinetic force rippled outward.

The pouch skidded across the desk, struck the inkwell, and tumbled over the far edge. It hit the floorboards with a violent thud, the drawstring snapping open. The Glowgold coins rolled across the mahogany planks, clattering against Hobart's polished boots.

"Keep your coins, Uncle Hobart," I said, my voice soft, almost a whisper, yet carrying an untouchable calm. "I will raise Greyson myself. And we won't take a single copper of your filthy blood money. You'd better pray that you never, ever need something from me."

Hobart stared, his face turning a blotchy red, utterly baffled that I would refuse his charity.

"We are leaving," I said. I turned, took Greyson's hand, and walked out.

The moment I crossed the threshold into the hallway, I flicked my fingers subtly by my side, sending a silent, wandless hex darting into the study.

The heavy doors clicked shut behind us. Barely a second later, a loud, violent crack echoed from inside, followed instantly by Hobart's sputtering shriek of pain and the heavy thud of a body hitting the floorboards.

"Uncle Hobart!" Emmie's panicked voice pierced through the thick wood. "Your chair just shattered! Are you okay? Was it... did Cristina do this?"

"Nonsense!" Hobart roared, his voice trembling with pain and sputtering rage. "She didn't even take out her Spirit Wand! How could that low-class, uneducated brat cast a wandless hex? It's just a rotten chair!"

A cold smile touched my lips. I led Greyson down the stairs, feeling nothing but the clean, metallic sensation of a chain breaking.

Outside the oppressive estate, the damp evening air hit my face. Greyson looked up at me, his small face tight with worry. "Sis, where are we going?"

"Somewhere we're actually wanted," I said, ruffling his hair.

My fingers traced the heavy bronze token in my pocket. It belonged to Collins Black. I needed a place to lie low, and it was time to collect a very old debt.

The next evening, I stood in the damp, crowded slums of Atheria, waiting outside a remedial magic workshop for Greyson. I pulled the hood of my oversized sweatshirt lower, blending into the grimy alleyway. The lower district was a maze of narrow cobblestone lanes, greasy shop fronts, and leaking steam vents.

Burrell Black POV:

The sleek, matte-black magical Bentley glided into the rotting slums of Atheria, stopping at the street corner. It possessed aerodynamic lines that didn't belong in this neighborhood, floating three inches above the wet stones without making a sound. The windows were enchanted obsidian glass, completely opaque to any standard revealing charm.

I pushed the rear door open and stepped out into the drizzle. I wore a tailored black coat that fell past my knees, cut from high-grade chimera hide that shed the rain like liquid mercury. We were tracking a lead on a legendary healer known as the Saint Hand, but the trail had gone cold in this miserable sector.

I instinctively unleashed a wave of my pureblood aura, a crushing, invisible pressure designed to clear the street and make lesser citizens bow their heads in fear. The ambient magic in the air grew instantly dense and suffocating. Witches and wizards scrambled away, lowering their eyes, terrified by the mere presence of the Enforcers' supreme commander.

But my gaze caught on someone who didn't move.

Standing near a grimy workshop was a young woman in faded jeans and an oversized sweatshirt. She didn't flinch. She didn't look away. Instead, she stared back at me, meeting my unseen gaze through the gloom. Her face was striking, possessing a cold, arrogant, and incredibly dangerous kind of beauty. There was a unique, lethal aura about her, like a sharpened blade hidden in the dark. She was completely immune to my intimidation. She stood tall, radiating an effortless defiance that instantly sent a jolt of sharp curiosity straight through my chest.

"Commander," my subordinate, Pierce Vance, muttered in disgust, completely missing the tension between us. "The tracking trace went dead right here. But a legendary master wouldn't hide in a sewer like this. Look at that poor, exhausted single mother over there. The informants fed us scrap."

A small boy ran out of the workshop and hugged the woman's waist. She pulled him close, her dark eyes never leaving mine. A poor single mother? Pierce was an idiot. A woman with eyes that cold and a posture that steady was no victim.
