I was busy working at the hospital when I saw the news reporter saying, "Sources say the president of Jablonsky Corporation shall return today."

A familiar face was plastered all over the television, and I froze. Stefan? It's been three years. So, he's back. Conflicting emotions welled within me. There was fear, but also anticipation. Once upon a time, I loved him with all my heart, but all it earned me was his contempt.

I took a deep breath and left the corridor, but just before I took the stairs, a familiar voice echoed through the air. "Abort it."

And once again, I froze. For some inexplicable reason, I stopped in my tracks to eavesdrop. My heart was thumping furiously, and I was worried he might notice me.

Cries. The cries of a woman came from within the room. "No, please. I don't want to abort it."

"We'll have more kids eventually." He spoke once more, his tone imperious. Cold. Uncaring.

I knew that voice anywhere. It belonged to Stefan. He's back, and he has a pregnant woman with him. For some reason, my heart skipped a beat. I ran. Afraid of hearing what he had to say to that woman, I ran. As I sat in my consultation room, I whipped my phone out and scrolled until I saw Stefan's number. Yet I had not the courage to call him. He didn't even tell me. Probably didn't want me to know.

A nurse passed by the room and asked, "Still working, Dr. Sutton?"

"Yeah. I have some matters to settle. You can go home if you want."

I could have gone back to Jablonsky Residence, but I chose to remain in the hospital until late at night. All so I wouldn't have to bump into Stefan when I head home. Yes, Stefan and I had lived under the same roof for nineteen years. Now that he had returned, I was sure he would come back here. But despite living in the same house, we were little more than strangers. He wasn't family, much less a friend, and definitely not a lover.

I sobered up for a moment and met Stefan's gaze. Then, my mind faltered. I thought he was sleeping. His face shone golden under the rays of the sun, softening his usually hard features. He was so dazzling, I couldn't shift my eyes away.

I was drawn to his looks. Every time I looked at him-even when I was a kid-my heart would flutter.

"I thought you were a cardiologist. Why were you in the OBGYN department?" asked Stefan suddenly.

I wondered why he would ask me that. My exhaustion slowed even my mind down. And then, everything around me turned a little dark. Stefan huddled closer to me, but I scrambled to escape his grasp. Then I held the handrail. "We'll talk later. I need to sleep. Exhausted." I shuffled into my room without looking at him.

My alarm clock woke me up later that afternoon. Reluctantly, I opened my eyes. I could still feel the clutches of sleep on my mind. And I would've slept in if I could, but that was not possible. I had a piano lesson to attend later, and it paid me well. It was one of the jobs that could make me money fast. I wouldn't miss it for the world.

I got up, put some light makeup on, and descended the stairs silently. When I realized Stefan wasn't at home, I started walking like normal, trotting to the lounge. Every time he was around, I would try to be as careful with every movement I made as possible, worried he might be upset. But my existence alone upset him. My efforts to cheer him up were futile.

Love letters would come to him almost every day, but none of the girls managed to make him fall for them.

Everyone thought he didn't like women, but I knew that was not the case. He tried to court me, after all. But I said no. I still loved Stefan back then, and we were in an intimate relationship, so to speak. I could never fall for someone else. It had been years since I saw Figaro. This reunion was a little awkward for me. I might have refused this job had I known I would be coming to his house.

Figaro didn't look awkward, however. It seemed like he had forgotten about our past. "Yeah. Surprised you, didn't I? My friend introduced you to me. I thought it was a case of the same names, but I was surprised when you turned up. My sister's a bit of a brat, though. Sorry if she causes any trouble."

Figaro looked confident, and I pushed my hair back stiffly. I wanted to quit, but I couldn't say no. "It's alright. This is my job."

I would teach his sister for six hours every weekend. Three hours each day, and he would pay me seventy-four dollars per hour. That was enough to entice me. Money was what I needed.
