Chapter 1: The Mirror Shard
Evershade was the kind of town where nothing ever happened. Tucked away between rolling hills and dense forests, it seemed frozen in time, with cobblestone streets and old-fashioned lampposts lining the quiet roads. Elena had always felt a strange pull toward the forest that bordered her small home, but she never dared venture too far.
That evening, as the sky darkened with the promise of rain, a package arrived at her door. It was small and wrapped in brown paper, her name scrawled across the top in a looping, elegant script.
She frowned. She hadn't ordered anything.
Inside was a wooden box, its surface intricately carved with symbols she didn't recognize. She opened it carefully, her fingers trembling with a mix of curiosity and unease.
Nestled inside was a shard of a mirror.
The fragment gleamed faintly, even in the dim light of her living room. Its surface was scratched and jagged, but it felt warm in her hand, almost alive. When she tilted it toward the light, her reflection wasn't her own.
A woman stared back at her, her eyes wide with desperation.
"Elena," the woman's lips moved silently, but no sound emerged.
Elena gasped, dropping the shard onto the carpet. Her heart raced as she stumbled back. She rubbed her eyes and glanced at the mirror again. This time, it showed only her own pale, terrified face.
She reached out tentatively, her fingertips brushing the shard.
"Elena."
The whisper was faint but unmistakable. It echoed in her ears, though the room was otherwise silent.
"Elena, you must listen."
She froze. "Who-who are you?" she stammered, her voice barely a whisper.
The shard grew warm again, and the voice grew stronger.
"They're coming," it said. "You must find the pieces before it's too late."
Elena's throat tightened. "Pieces? What pieces? Who's coming?"
But the whisper faded, leaving her alone with the shard and a thousand unanswered questions.
For the first time in her life, she felt that Ever shade wasn't as quiet as it seemed. Something was stirring-something ancient and dangerous-and she was somehow at the center of it.
Chapter 2: The Warning
Elena couldn't stop staring at the shard. It sat on her desk, glowing faintly as if alive. Her instincts told her to hide it, yet something else-a pull she couldn't explain-made her keep it close.
She spent the night tossing and turning, the voice from the shard echoing in her dreams: "They're coming."
By morning, her fear had given way to curiosity. She wrapped the shard in a cloth and placed it in her bag before heading out to the town library. If anyone knew about strange artifacts, it would be Mrs. Hawthorne, the elderly librarian who seemed to know everything about Evershade's history.
The library was quiet, the smell of old books and polished wood filling the air. Mrs. Hawthorne was perched behind the counter, her round glasses slipping down her nose as she read.
"Mrs. Hawthorne," Elena began hesitantly, "do you know anything about old mirrors or... strange symbols?"
The librarian looked up, her eyes narrowing behind her glasses. "Mirrors?" she repeated. "What sort of mirrors?"
"I'm not sure," Elena said, pulling a piece of paper from her bag. She had sketched some of the symbols from the wooden box that held the shard. "These were carved on the box it came in."
Mrs. Hawthorne adjusted her glasses and studied the paper for a long moment. "These are old runes," she said finally. "Very old. You don't see these much anymore."
"What do they mean?" Elena asked.
The librarian's lips pursed. "Protection. Warning. Sometimes both." She glanced at Elena, her eyes sharp. "Where did you find this?"
