The Path of the King
History John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir PC GCMG GCVO CH (1875 – 1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian, biographer and editor. Outside the field of literature he was, at various times, a barrister, a publisher, a lieutenant colonel in the Intelligence Corps, the Director of Information—reporting directly to prime minister David Lloyd George—during the First World War. Quote from book; "The newspapers announced in large type that the 'Kronprinzessin Emilie', the crack flyer of the Bremen-American line, was to carry from the United States to Germany the vast sum of $6,000,000 in bullion. On her sailing day the dock, from which she was to start on what destined to prove the most eventful voyage ever made since men first went down to the sea in ships, was jammed with gaping crowds. They interfered with the passengers, and employees of the company had to jostle their way among them as best they could." Greenmantle
Literature A classic espionage and adventure novel set during The Great War, featuring the reckless Richard Hannay. Sequel to „The Thirty-Nine Steps" and precursor to Mr. Standfast. Tasked with unraveling a mysterious message, Hannay travels through Germany and the Middle East, searching for the elusive religious leader ''Greenmantle''. He is joined by three more of Buchan's heroes: Peter Pienaar, the old Boer Scout; John S. Blenkiron, the American determined to fight the Kaiser; and Sandy Arbuthnot, Greenmantle himself, modelled on Lawrence of Arabia. However, they must begin the task with no clues except three words scribbled on a piece of paper – Kasredin, cancer, and v.I. In different disguises the men take separate roads to Constantinople where they will meet and begin their search, if they all arrive safely – and it's a big if.
